Arse! Thankfully it's stuck out so I can still tow but this message pops up every time I try to retract it.
It's a fully electric swivel thingy. Swings out and locks itself. Swings back and fully retracts.
Currently I can hear a clicking sound when I try to retract it then a buzzer goes off in the boot and this error pops up.
Assume there's a solenoid that locks it in place and that's failed or stuck. I know how to get the cap off the back of the swivel motor to check the connections. Haven;t got that far yet but from what I read, if it's not a loose connection and something has failed, VW will just want to replace the whole unit. I can't find any repair instructions or anyone posting who's tried to repair one. It could be that it just needs a bit of grease!
If my warranty will cover it I'm very tempted to ask them to fit a manually removable hitch. These things seem to be way too flaky..
This is from a BMW forum but it looks almost exactly like the VW branded bar I have fit
