Oil leak from holes in cylinder heads

Hi
I own a 2007 VW Touareg 3.0 TDI. It has an oil leak problem the day I bought it but the problem has grown. The leak is on both sides of the head cylinder and the oil dips onto the exhaust manifold causing smell and smoke.
The oil only drops when the engine is running. Here are the photos of the problem.

The oil drops in drip style here. I have made a video but not sure how to upload here. My friend is a mechanical engineer who is helping me fix it but we are stuck here. Can someone guide us please what this may be and what is the solution?

Thanks

Some basic questions:

1. Can't tell from the pics but you say you have a 3.0 TDI - is this issue therefore happening with both cylinder heads (V6 TDI)

2. Presumably you have checked the rocker cover gaskets for any leaks

3. AFAIK there should be no oil leaks from the head itself - are there any signs of cracks

4. How has your oil level been - any increase in volume which might indicate that fuel is leaking into the sump

I'm not aware of any plugs in the cylinder head which might leak as you describe - there are core plugs in the block in case the engine coolant freezes

Those are vent holes. If the injector brass seal leaks the excess blowby from combustion past the seal will vent here as to not damage the injector orings.

Over time the heat will kill the orings and you will get diesel or oil leaking past depending on injector design.

Best you get the injectors taken out and fresh seals with fresh TTY bolts installed.

TTY?

Did you miss out a middle I and the following T?!

(Goggle indicates these are - presumably single use - Torque To Yield bolts.)

The injector 'O' ring seals must be leaking to allow engine oil to drain out from those holes. There is no path for diesel fuel to leak there. Its not a common failure to my knowledge so given its on several cylinders it makes you wonder if the injectors have been removed recently and not refitted carefully enough. You'll need remove all the injectors and replace gaskets, copper seals and O rings. There are no single use bolts, stretch bolts, TTY bolts used but you will need to renew each injector bracket. Make sure the cylinder head injector bores are clean and lightly oil injectors seals on reassembly. Refit injectors to the same cylinders they're removed from.

Thanks everyone for your input. Thanks for detailed explanation Chaser. It leaks on both sides. Do both the cylinder heads need to be removed? Can the inject 'O' rings be accessed without removing them cylinder heads. It is engine oil and it has turned my driveway black. It burns into smoke and smells. What will happen if I block these vents? Will it kill the engine?

The injectors are changed without removing the cylinder heads, it's easy enough to do at home.

Only a proper repair will do, no blocking holes...

Injector themselves have been troublesome on these engines so you will find guides exist already on various forums if you google.

Any idea where to buy these gaskets, o rings and seals from? I couldn't find them on Eurocarparts or GSF websites? Should I buy off eBay or ring VW? Can you send me a link or image of these gaskets and seals so I know what I'm looking for please.

Google or visit your dealer parts department...

059 130 519 copper washer
059 130 216 tensioning plate
WHT 000 884 o ring seal
059 103 113 end cap with gasket. (I've included this number in case but you could reuse existing ones provided they're not leaking and your careful with removal)

Now stop bothering me..

Good luck.

Just to update on this thread, chaser was absolutely right, the injectors were changed or cleaned by someone who found it too difficult to put them back with the o ring seals hence just shoved them in without them. The rings were missing on 4 of them. I replaced those along copper seals etc and no more oil leaking now.

Thank you to everyone for your help. I have another problem that I'm listing in a new topic. I shall appreciate some help there too.
