Car alarm problem

0500 this morning and the car alarm kicked off repeatedly but, interestingly, the flashers only worked a few times at the start of each "shout".

For several reasons there's absolutely no chance of anyone trying to interfere with or pinch the car so something electrical/mechanical [or both] has gone phut or got confused.

I silenced it by using the key in the driver's door lock to lock and unlock the car and by using only the key in the door it's been fine all day.

But if I try to open the car using the remote button on the key fob, off goes the alarm again until I start the car when it shuts up so it seems the problem might possibly be linked to the central locking but, of course, with Treg electrics it could be something totally different.

I seem to recall that Land Rover used to have a sequence of using the key in the driver's door to reset the alarm parameters but I can find nothing about VWs in this respect.

The car is booked in to VW Windrush Maidenhead next week but if anyone has any ideas in the meantime .....

Thank you.

Have you checked the Battery? I had a similar thing on my Beetle and it was the battery on its way out

And don't laugh - but I once had a similar problem with a moth getting caught on the car..........

Sure it wasn't a butterfly attracted to the pretty pink flower you had in the Beetles dash vase

Thanks for that - I did fleetingly wonder this morning about the battery as I know it has been the cause of other electrical gremlins.

In fact, as I type, that has just set me thinking: I did a high speed 12 mile run early this evening and experimented at my destination [no neighbours to annoy] with both key fobs to find that the car remote locking and alarm behaved perfectly no matter what I did to trip it up. I even locked it with the key in the driver's door and used the remote to unlock, and vice wersa.

But I've just got home, having stopped to help at a minor accident for about 15-20 minutes - 3 cars had run over a large, heavy steel ramp from a car or plant transporter which had caused quite a bit of underside/exhaust damage and a couple of tyres blown out - and whilst there all the lights, flashers, etc., were on with only a mile to go to come home and now the alarm is malfunctioning again.

This makes me think that at the very least I'll put a new battery on tomorrow anyway even though the voltmeter is pointing at all the right numbers during start and cruise.

And, no, I didn't laugh about the moth. It's a perfectly sensible possibility so I am just going out to spray the interior with RAID!

Thank you.

Well the battery was replaced as the voltage was down anyway [I've posted instructions on the "how to" elsewhere] but the alarm problem continued.

So it was off to VW Windrush, Maidenhead who could see on VAGCOM the previous four alarms, two of which were when I had failed to insert the ignition key quickly enough after unlocking the car with it, and the other two pointed to a faulty siren.

Today, the new siren was installed [front bumper off job] for ÂŁ283 inc VAT, the bulk of which is being picked up by Warranty Direct.

So here's hoping for peaceful nights again!
