I know this is vague, but can anyone have a guess as to the cause of a whirring sound/noise when the engine is on. It is coming from the side and behind where the DPF housing is. Shall I call the VW Assist? Thanks.

Thanks Nap. I will answer your questions:
No - it is on all the time and it does not matter whether it is in gear or not, engine hot or cold. The climate contol is always on between 16 - 22C so the fan is always on.
I will try to call VW Assist tomorrow afternoon after work to get an opinion.

Probably not much help but with my V6 Treg I get a contstant whining noise at high speed. It usually stops when my wife gets out of the car though......
Slightly off topic but fair point, I got the same whining noise, and i took mine to a Treg meet up at Rob's and the whining got worse

Well, the noise coming from mine is the mechanical one!
I got VW Assist to check it out this afternoon and the mechanic diagnosed a faulty valve that regulates the air flow to the turbo charger. This is a fifteen minute job (but he did not have the part, which is sealed and not serviceable). So he asked me to check with Alan Day of New Southgate when I can get it done but I was told that, since it was a luxury car, it will have to be in for two days!!
After a phone call, the mechanic said he's managed to get the part and will come and change it for me tomorrow midmorning. I have to say I have been very impressed with VW Assist and in particular the mechanic - his name is Mark. He was so helpful. Hope the whole thing will be resolved tomorrow. As has been written so many times here, pity that the dealers do not treat their customers as they should and pity that VW cannot put pressure on them to get their act together or else remove their franchise.

Not so good news I am afraid!!! The mechanic from VW Assist came to replace the part but it did not solve the problem .
However, he managed to locate the root of the problem which is a little further away from the valve. He is going to the dealer to get the part number and order it. Hopefully it will be done next Monday (fingers crossed!!!).
