Hi,

I have a weird issue with our radio/sound system in our 2014 Touareg. It turns on, all seems normal but there is no sound from the radio and the volume is “stuck”! If I connect Bluetooth, insert an SD card, play from the hard drive or cd player/dvd player, I have sound but it cuts out every approximately 30 seconds. I have video of it, but can’t upload it to the post.

Wondering if it could be a hard drive issue? I assume it’s not a fuse on the amp as I still get sound. I’ve checked all fuses in the fuse panel and haven’t started pulling bits out to check individual fuses in units yet. Navigation works as normal and the cameras are all still working. I’ve also done all the resets I could find!! And heaps of searching on here looking for the same issue.

Any help would greatly appreciated

I doubt its a HDD drive issue if the same problem is exhibited whn playing media from BT, SD and CD....

Do you have the RNS850?

Have you tried a factory reset?

yes I believe it is the RNS850. And yes I’ve done every reset I can find including pulling fuses when it’s on.

Sounds to me like some sort of amplifier problem in the electronics themselves. Might be getting a thermal breakdown in one of the components within the amp. Not a lot can be done if that’s the case other than bench checking of the units. Sounds like it needs some specialist repair shop on the case

Ok, so some more fault finding and investigation into this. I did speak to 2 VW dealers who had no idea either what was going on. One even suggested I needed a new head unit. But after having a think and scratching my head for days now, I have an idea and would appreciate anyones advice as to whether I could be on the right track. nb. The car was scanned with no faults found. I also disconnected the battery for a couple of hours to see if this forced some sort of reset. Battery is fine according to all my multimeter checks too.

I'm thinking that perhaps there is an issue with the radio module. I am not sure if this is a separate module or integrated into the amplifier unit, any advice here would be great. I think if they are spearate, that the amp and radio module are in the back right hand side of the car. Is it possible that the system performs a scan every 25-30 seconds and because there is a fault in the radio module this is causing the cut out issue. As I stated before it cuts out nearly precisely every 27 seconds, not randomly which would be more inclined to indicate an overheating / faulty component.

If anyone knows if the system does do a scan and whether it is every 30 seconds or so I would love to know as this will help enormously in tracking down the issue.

I got quoted ridiculous prices for VW to check it out and the vibe I got from them was they had no idea anyway apart from replacing everything which I was quoted $8000 for!! Stuff that!!
