Hi all...

I have a 2008 v8 7L BAR Treg since new; she is affectionately referred to as the 'family truckster'. Just over 2 years ago I started having transmission problems, which lead to the local dealer replacing it with new from Germany. At the time, I was extremely thankful to hear there weren't any 'used' trannies available in the US; now I wonder if there isn't something very different with the new tranny. Prior to the install, I could always switch the gear lever to manual and start in 2nd gear if I wanted. Since the install I am unable to do this...it will only start in 1st gear. I have asked the dealer numerous times, only to be told "it must be an update to the newer transmissions". This makes no sense to me, as I have never owned a vehicle that didn't allow you to start in 2nd gear, especially in wet or snowy conditions...should there be a traction issue like being stuck on ice or in mud.

Does anyone know if there is any way to enable/disable the ability to select 2nd gear as a starting gear in VCDS or any other way. My property is a mountain with the house level at about 85% to the summit, with an extremely steep driveway...about a 18% grade. Under dry and average wet conditions this is no problem, but when snow or ice are present, I opt to start in 2nd for less 'spin' on the wheels.

Any input is greatly appreciated-thanks.

I’ve only ever started my Touaregs with the transmission in Park (Neutral is also recommended) and my foot on the parking brake - once the engine has started you can select the mode and the gear you require. I understand why you want to select 2nd in the circumstances you describe however the new transmission most likely has updated software to ensure you always start it as recommended 🤔

Thanks for the response and feedback. I must apologize, when I said “start”, I didn’t mean “start the engine”; I meant start as-in “letting my foot off the brake pedal and START accelerating via foot on the gas/petrol pedal”. Sorry guys and gals for the syntax error...my bad.

To be clear my issue is: start engine, normally, with transmission in PARK. Then drop gear selector to D for drive and slide to the right for manual-mode. Once in manual mode, I used to be able to change from 1st gear to 2nd before beginning to accelerate. Note...throughout all steps above the car is still in the same physical place as it was when I first started the engine...I haven’t yet let my foot off the brake pedal. I just want to be able to BEGIN accelerating in 2nd gear instead of 1st.

Thank you!

I must admit - this isn’t something I’ve ever tried or had reason to but I understand your issue with traction and moving off in slippery conditions.

Have you tried to select 2nd whilst still keeping your foot on the brake - you mention using your left foot for braking, I’m assuming you need to do this because the car is parked on the gradient and you have released the handbrake 🤔

Like most manufacturers, VW will regularly provide software updates and update parts and provide software updates during their production life.

I don't see a mention of left foot braking Cass.
I also didn't ever have cause to try moving away in 2nd but clearly it was possible. I can only suggest posting the question on the Ross tech forum.

A lot of the ZF gearboxes are set to only pull away in 2nd. My F-Pace does that, even in Sport & Dynamic modes - the only way to get it to pull away in 1st is to use the flappy paddles.

My previous 7L 2.5 diesel you could select second gear in high and low range and my current 7P V6 diesel you can select second gear to move away.

I didn’t mention ‘left’ anything...let alone foot. I think you’re speed reading far too many posts-j/k. (LOL)
Either way, prior to the replacement of the transmission I could always select 2nd gear(manually) to take off from a stopped position, whether in high or low range. Since the transmission was replaced, I am no longer able to accelerate in any other gear but 1st. When I bought my Treg new in 2008, I was living in Dallas, TX USA (warm climate). I moved north to Pennsylvania where winters are equivalent to the UK, where snow and ice on roads is common. Figures I really had no use for this function when I was in Dallas and I had it...now I can usually find a need for it and can’t use it anymore.

Let me clarify; I am unable to accelerate (from a stopped position) in any other gear but first. Hope that clears things up. 😬

Yes, guilty as charged. Trying to watch TV, football on my iPad and forum business on my iPhone - I’m clearly not up to such multi-tasking 😬

Chaser is the forum tech Guru so I’d go with his recommendation 👍

The 8 speed Aisin in the T3/T4 allow starting in second. A your earlier model 6 speed Aisin allowed it. Why would a later replacement 6 speed Aisin not allow it ? Need data from someone with a 2010 T2 6 speeds to see what that last installed 6 speed does and if it starts in second in manual if selected then VW need to explain why the change for your replacement transmission was made or whether it is a fault they need to fix.

cheers

Thanks Rohan for the feedback. Have not felt at all comfortable with this dealership since I was told “it’s probably a change at VW, nothing we can do about it” by a Service Advisor...without even trying to look it up in the computer or asking a technician. I then asked the only remaining dealership I. The area and they seemed as though they didn’t want to cause waves with the dealership that replaced the tranny(above). I LOVE my Treg...but I truly despise the support, or lack thereof, that is available for it at our local dealerships. It’s as though these guys don’t even know that VW ever built an SUV.

In Dallas, TX- a large city, where I bought the Treg originally, the dealerships had techs who were ‘specialized’ to service Touaregs. Those techs spent weeks in Touareg service training classes. Here, in podunk PA, it seems they didn’t bother to get anyone ‘trained’ or ‘specialized’ and simply fly by the seat of their pants or whatever info they can find on YouTube. It doesn’t help that VW has stopped exporting the Touareg to the US...all because they failed miserably at properly marketing them to the American Driver. There are so many Q7s and Cayennes on the roads...because Porsche and Audi drove the interest via aggressive marketing campaigns.

I’d so love to buy a new one...but hell , I can’t even touch one let alone test drive one. Guess when I do my European vacation in the next year or two (COVID willing), I will be touring a few VW dealerships, and maybe I’ll just have to buy one and ship it home from there!!! 😜

If the guys in Texas are fully trained then why not ring that dealership and ask them how the new tranny should be working?

You have our sympathies as here in the UK we have the same issues with VW dealerships.

The Touareg and Phaeton models were produced and marketed by VW as their luxury cars and they had dedicated dealerships and technicians to service and maintain them.

Sadly, the credit crunch put paid to all that and although some specialist technicians still exist, they are becoming the exception and VW reverted back to being a mainstream volume dealer again many years ago.

Dieselgate hasn’t helped but their lack of knowledge and their customer support is embarrassing on occasions.

It may not help, but ….. you are not alone 🤷‍♂️

I have called and left messages both with an S.A.(service advisor), and emailed as well; to date no responses other than an emailed auto-reply. Sadly, it’s been years since I was in the Dallas area, and I couldn’t tell you who still works there, if anyone.
I thought maybe someone here might have had a similar experience and be able to shed some light on this for me.

Thank you, all the same for the solid idea!

Does VW NA not have a Customer Care or Tech Delartment who might be an,e to assist you. In the UK we have that ability to ask questions and have them referred to the Tech Dept and open up a case regarding issues 🤔

Cass...

Thanks again for your help with this as well as my other issue with the memory seats. My apologies for the delay in response, pain had me down most of the last week. I took another shot and gave my original dealership in Texas a call. I spoke with a salesperson and explained my situation. I asked if he could connect me to a service manager regarding my issue. He replied the service managers were in a department meeting and he would see to it, personally, that one of them return my call that afternoon. About 2 hours later I received a callback from the assistant service manager who just happened to be my SA (service advisor) when I bought my Treg back in ‘08 until I left Texas. I explained the situation in great detail to him and he said he would check with his lead master tech and get back to me.

The next morning he called me back and informed me that in the new transmission, the coding in the TCM is preset to allow taking off from a stop, in 2nd gear, only when the differential selector is in LOW or one of the diff-lock modes, dependent on whether you have air ride or not. Mine does not have air ride and only has locking mode for front diff, not rear...rear I believe is only available on Tregs with air ride.

I tested it, and he is correct. I don’t know why they removed the ability to select 2nd gear from a stop in Auto(High), and neither did he. He did say he would pass it up the food chain to ascertain the reason for the change and whether or not it can be changed via VCDS, or if the TCM itself needs flashing to change the behavior.

So...there it is, for good or bad. I was fine in Auto and second before the tranny replacement. I will have to see how it behaves when we get some winter weather that gives me a reason to need it. I will update with any new info as I receive it.

Many thanks again!
Peace & Luv of all things Treg!

A good result in one way in that you at least had continuity in personnel that enabled you to get an answer - even if it's not the one you want.
