Ticking Noise From Aux Heater

Many thanks to all those who replied to my last post in Dec on this ticking noise but now we know what it is (resonance from aux heater), how many of us are still waiting for VW to supply the insulation kit to fix the problem??

My dealer says the part is still on back order but it seems a long time to me - I know it's not a VOR situation but most cars I've owned the parts have only taken a day or two, a week at most to arrive.

I remember Badger was waiting to be fixed (sorry
, didn't mean it like that ...you know what I mean
... to have his car fixed). Has anyone had their insulation kit fitted recently?

Thanks for the reply Badger
at least I'm not the only one then...

Know what you mean about the noise...I now find myself waiting to hear it, like I'd be worried if it weren't there
...not that I'd don't still want it fixed though (Mr VW dealer - if you're reading this)

Can't say I've had too many rattles and the Treg seems better screwed together than the AMG ML I had but there is a noise from the back seat on rough roads and I can't think what it might be...

Reminds me though of the old Golf advert...where the squeeking turned out to be the girlfriends earing

On back order approx 2 months now. I'd like the noise to stop but am not all that confident about the dealer taking things apart and putting them back together....

Mark,

Are VW saying the 'ticking' noise is coming from the Auxilary heater resonating? I find that very hard to believe. I have ticking coming from my centre console and I know for a fact that it comes from the 'actuators / servomotors'. I used to be an AC engineer supplying VW complete AC systems and know these noises very well indeed.

I would be interested to know 'exactly' what they are changing.

I get the ticking noise immediately after starting the engine and it only appeared after the onset of winter
It lasts until the engine has fully warmed up - usually 10+ minutes, then disappears. It is of no significance and doesn't bother me in the slightest - now I understand what's causing it.

When I discussed it with my helpful dealership, I was reassured to have the Senior Tech chap explain the noise is generated from aux heater, which I didn't know I had!

He explained that the large interior cabin and slow warming diesel engine means it would take an unacceptably long time to get sufficient heat in the vehicle, when starting from cold. The the aux heater is fitted to assist interior heating until the engine is warm enough to take over. The aux heater only kicks in below a set outside temperature.
I tested the theory/explanation, and I'm completely convinced about it!!

It goes something like this:
Start your diesel engine on a cold morning and drive for about 3 - 5 minutes. Stop, switch off the engine and quickly get out of the car; you will hear the sound of a slowing turbine-like sound (like a jet engine shutting-down after arrival at the gate) and you might even see some bluish exhaust appearing from under the front passanger side of the car. If the wind is blowing in the right direction, you'll get an unusual smell of partly burnt fuel - and that is your ticking, aux heater.

I am sure this is only an issue for diesel engined Touaregs but can't be certain... I just accept the ticking is something I have during the winter..

I may ask the garage to fit the repair kit to stop the noise when I go for the dreaded second service - but then again I think I'd get worried if the ticking wasn't there now!

Hi Kaine,

The noise does seem to come from around the centre console area and when I first heard it I thought it sounded electro-mechanical (like a solenoid constantly clicking in and out)...not loud but as you know, when you've been in the trade, your hearing 'tunes in' to things

I was told by the dealer that the noise was being made by 'resonance' from the 'pump' used for the auxiliary heater and that the fix involved fitting an insulation kit, this seemed to be confirmed by what other forum members had been told (as per Rod 10's post).

I think the term 'resonance' may be inappropriate, but as I'm not yet familiar enough with the Treg's systems it might be wrong for me to say...

Do you know if anyone on the forum has bought a 'factory' manual for the Treg - I usually get one when I buy a new car but other than the U.S spec Bentley CD's I don't know whether there is a U.K/European source (my first VW) and I guess VW wouldn't want to sell them over the counter.

The noise is from the little fuel pump that supllies the webasto heater, my company fits these and similar units to yachts/boats etc. There is no resonance issues that I have ever come across that 'click'. This little pump is a small solenoid device from memory and will click while operating and delivers about a thimblefull of diesel every minute or so.

Thanks Electro/Rod 10.

Actually, I was moving the Treg on the drive yesterday (to vac the interior), got out to check the vac cable would reach and low and behold, slight puff of blue diesel smoke emanating from the underside (gearbox area).....

Isn't it great when things make sense
but for this forum I'd have been crawling underneath to look for a crack in the exhaust

Thanks!

Are we all talking about the same thing here? I understand the noises from the Aux heater, however how does this noise in the engine bay produce 'ticking noises' around the centre console?

Hi Kaine,

Don't know - maybe we're on a different tack..

The noise I have seems to come from around the centre console/transmission tunnel area - a slow ticking noise (like an old clock).

From what Electro/Rod 10 have said I believe this is the pump for the aux heater which, if I'm thinking right, would be located somewhere around the heater matrix in order to provide an auxiliary heating system to 'boost' the temperature inside the car until the engine coolant reaches a suitable temp.

You mentioned actuator type noises in your last post - what do you hear?

Hi All,

I started to hear this ticking noise in December and booked the car into a dealer after christmas for a few other jobs, their techie told me the same thing its the Aux heater that kicks in when the outside temp drops below 9C or 48 in Euro Babble.

Does this mean i don't have to freeze for the first 5 mins when i get in the car in the morning?

Doh!!

Well got the car back, haven't heard the ticking and a good job appears to have been done. The local temperatures have risen though so I'll feedback if I hear any little ticking noises.

That's good news - fingers crossed then.

Had the call from the dealer to say they now had the part but with business commitments haven't had the time to get the car booked in.

I have a long drive to the dealer and with time at a premium I'd be interested to know your thoughts on the fix (temp permitting)

Temp 4.5 today and no tick. I'll update next cold snap.

Had another call from the dealer to say about booking mine in - nice to know they're keen to put things right, just a shame they're not more local...

Anyway, have now booked mine in for the fix as well.

Always have some reservations about leaving any of my cars with a dealership but I've not had cause to use their services so far and hopefully everything will go smoothly and my pride and joy will come back in A1 condition.

Well, got the car fixed Friday and I have to say...

Had been told they might need it for a couple of days but no, the work was done by lunchtime....

No ticking noises since - just peace and quiet
