I am posting this as a refernce should anyone experience the same as me.
The meat of my saga is documented in another post:

The problem:
Car up to temperature, on tickover for 5 minutes or so ... major vibration through the car.
This also shows as the rev counter jumping from 700rpm to 1100rpm. If you touch the throttle the problem goes away.
Answer:
Replacement of the dual mass flywheel. They also replaced the G28 sensor.
