New to Treg's and this forum and wondering if I will be able to get an answer to my annoying Sat Nav problem. My 2.5 TDI Sport SE has the fitted Sat Nav system complete with TMC buttons and 2nd tuner. However all I get is TMC Seek being displayed indicating that there is no channel available. I also drive a Volvo S60 with sat nav that has a really good TMC service. When I returned to my dealer I did not really get a satisfactory response from the service technician who did not quite seem to understand how TMC works and said that the service is not available in this country. I visited another VW dealer who has responded in writing telling me that TMC is not supported by VW UK at the moment but that I can by a DVD from Tele Atlas direct that does have TMC enabled.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Other than that I love my new Touareg.......

I am struggling with the exact same problem :bashwall: . What I do know is that the satnav disk is supplied by teleatlas and is the latest revision (rev 3). TMC does not work for me, but I will look into it further. It did however also not work when I was in the NL over the weekend, so it can't be the UK support.

I will continue to have a look and keep you updated.

Kind regards,
Rob

As far as I know there are always two versions of the TeleAtlas disks - TMC and non-TMC. The former is more expensive. I think most VWs tend to come with the non-TMC one. TMC definitely works in the UK and in VWs, I have it in my Touran now. I think there have been other posts about this if you search.

Thanks guys, really welcome any help on this as its driving me mad. Got stuck in a jam at the Blackwall Tunnel last night that could (and would) have been avoided if I had TMC!!!!!!!!

If you have the latest DVD based sat nav there are two things you need to be aware of:
1) The disk supplied by VW is TMC enabled for Europe BUT not for UK. They don't want to pay the UK licence fee. So your sat nav should be able to access TMC in Europe in the countries where it is available, but if you want to access TMC in the UK you will have to buy a TMC enabled disk from TeleAtlas.
2) On the DVD sat nav system there is an option hidden away in the system set up which switches on the availablity of TMC, it is shown in the handbook, but I cannot remember the exact location as I have a CD based system, but I can remember having to switch it on for my neighbour before he took his Touareg to France.
Finally, if you do decide to splash out on the TMC enabled disk for the UK be aware that it is TMC enabled for motorways only!

Thanks for that.

Really useful. I will reset the system when I am travelling to France this weekend and give it a good test. If I like it I will certainly consider the TMC enabled version from Teleatlas.

) for sale if anyone wants it ?
Hi Rossco,

Stick it on ebay!

Saw one on there recently and it was over ?90.00 with some time to go so may have made much more!!

there were quite a few bidding as well.

That will soften the blow.

Teleatlas have been really thoroughly crap with this.

New Touaregs come with DVD satnav and have done since February/March06, according to Teleatlas. (They don't seem to be very good with their facts, though on or off map.) The Satnav unit that contains the DVD is TMC ready. The DVD supplied is the first revision to cover the whole of Europe. It's the DVD that contains the licensing files which allow your Satnav unit to decode the TMC data stream off the FM radio.

There is currently no DVD available from VW or Teleatlas which has the appropriate licensing files for TMC in the UK. There is no good reason why this shouldn't be sorted out, for A roads too. I had this on my stone age BMW, so I know it's available. And the satnav on the BMW seemed to know the difference between an A road and a motorway - did you know the road off the M23 towards East Grinstead is called the M2037?

I downloaded a copy of all of the TeleAtlas cd's including the UK TMC. This works well but has it has been said elsewhere only works for motorways.
Be aware gents that buying TeleAtlas cd's from ebay, you may buy a fake for a lot of money. Unlike me who just downloads and sorts out the copy protection for own use, other download the cd image, and the cd label and fromt/back cover and create a working but fake TeleAtlas copy. It will work 8 out of 10 times but you may pay ?40 or ?50 pounds for what in effect is a fake cd with a colour printed laberl.

Just though I warn you guys

I have tried the TMC enabled DVD in Europe now and it works!!!!! However when driving through Paris it did not pick up on any of the traffic jams ..... must be standard in Paris and not reported through TMC. It does pick up on the roadworks though ... even if it is just left over pilons from a week ago. All in all the TMC seems to work in Europe but the information provided through the system is S*$T. If that's all Teleatlas are providing in the UK as well you may just as well not buy the new TMC enabled DVD!! Other than that the information provided by the system is very reliable and does give you directions to where no Brit has ever gone before (in France that is) ....... took very strange roads getting to the motorway and had a few frowns <_< from local French in farmer costumes wearing garlic around their necks.

Cheers,
Rob

If its any comfort to you very few if any DVD sat/nav systems supplied in the UK have the TMC enabled. That includes Navteq as well as Teleatlas the only one that is that I am aware of is the latest Volvo...
Apparently it is a decision taken by the the suppliers of the data unless it it requested by the vehicle manufacturer, and that includes the latest Aston Martin Vantage also who do not have it.... <_< <_< <_<
However in the UK it may be included next year on most DVD disk systems, at least that is what I am being told.. Mainly as a result that there is no national supported radio ie BBC as there is in Europe. As a last minute gesture Classic FM took it up for the CD versions although there little or no difference in the broadcast signals for either the CD's or DVD's the ITIS codes for the UK info is not on the DVD disks.

As an after thought the new Bentley does although that has a Navteq disk in it. It may be worth scouting around to find a Bosch /Teleatlas DVD supplied system in another manufacturer's vehicle that also has TMC enabled for the UK and trying the DVD from that vehicle.

Go down to your BMW garage and test an X5 - you will see a perfectly functioning TMC system. Motorways, A roads and everything! Many cars have it.

The French have their own unique approach to providing TMC traffic information - I agree it's hopeless relying on it there! The data in this country are not that good either - often out of date or wrong, but better than in France.

It's our measly government's fault for selling a license to ICTIS or whatever they are called, rather than making it freely available. Although, I would pay for the service if it were available on the open market and working well.

It's a shame that such a potentially good system is being cocked up by politics, but I guess not surprising.

Cruddy satnav is the only thing that irritates me about the Touareg - no way would I actually suggest buying an X5!

Clearly a bit of a hot topic, my other car - Volvo S60 T5 - has a really great TMC service from the Navtec DVD. Works on all roads give really good advance warnings and has saved me loads of time in the past. If only my Treg would work half as well! oh well I guess life cant be perfect. At the end of the day its a little price to pay considering how good the rest of the car is.

Only other comment is that why oh why do the dealers not just front up and say it does not work in the first place? It would not have stopped me buying the car but now just irritates me that the buttons are there but I cant use it......
