Well something finally broke (can't count tyre wear), and I cant really blame VW as they buy in the sat nav unit.

It started with half the buttons not responding, quickly followed by none responding except the volume. Its now stuck on the radio page for Radio 5 on 909 (I need 693 in Brum!!), with no way of changing it to CD, map, navi etc. I also cant change volume or station from the steering wheel, or see the alti-meter.

As always, these things happen at awkward times - sat on a cliff on the Isle of Wight watching the yatch race !! I had to buy a road atlas to get home the Midlands !!

The handbook has no section on what to do if things go wrong (theres confidence for you!!), but does anyone know if there is a Re-set button or method or rebooting the unit similar to the way of resetting the auto gearbox memory ??

Otherwise, has anyone had a replacment under warrenty before (how long did it take to come?), and as the unit in new cars is DVD based, might I get an upgrade if my unit is out of stock/production ?

Not sure about reset, though you can usually reset these things by taking the power away completely for a few hours.

Wasn't there a thread recently about replacement under warranty of a CD based system, and they were on backorder. So, unlikely to get a replacement DVD I suspect

Meld can the CD be ejected from the sat/nav and any other CD inserted, such as an earlier version. It has the feel of a system 'hang'. If the CD can be ejected then maybe the original can then be reinserted which should reload the flash memory, anything that 'persuade' the reload. Worth a try if not already done so.

If you had not driven quite a distance I might have suggested a battery issue 'lacking charge' because a number of shutdown steps takes place such as shutting down sat/nav.

Sorry for delay replying (been away), Wonderful Listers Stratford took unit out to power it down to see exactly what you said, but decided it was Kaput! (German technical word meaning Dunno!). New unit on order, no quibbles!

It was VW Stratford that changed my unit. The problem was intermittent but no quibbles, they put a new one in straight away. Was impressed with their service.
