RNS 850 sat nav problem

Just purchased my first Touareg, 2012 Altitude, I am having a problem with the sat nav system, when in use it is displaying the wrong location, but still calculating a route and giving information. It has even placed the car in the sea. I have manually enter my location, but quickly when driving looses the current location and selects another nearby, but continue to give directions. I have tried a factory system restore and the 5 button reset, still having the same issue. All other function with the unit seem OK. Anyone else experienced this?

Are you on a boat?
I have had this issue twice! It's a fault with the GPS receiver head it will need replacing. It should be fixed under warranty if you still have it, or will cost you about £350 from a dealer if not.
If it is out of warranty, and you have only just bought it the supplying garage should pay for the replacement head.

Car is booked in next week for investigation by the supplying dealer.
Just got the Touareg back from my local dealer, reported GPS antenna at fault. I now have to wait on the supplying dealer to authorise payment for the replacement. Also sunroof not closing, dealer wants to remove the complete sunroof, clean, grease and refit to solve issue.

It doesn't need completely removing to solve this.. It is normally the sliders and the top front hinge of the sliding part that tightens up and causes the anti pinch to kick in.
I found when my pano roof started to play up that it was just the wind deflector arms that needed a wipe of silicone to help them slide under the closing roof. The anti pinch issue was resolved!

Excellent, thanks for updating your topic with the resolution.
From past experience I do a sunroof lubrication at the end of the summer and try not to open sunroof in the winter because it's very sensitive and I once got into this situation on a rainy day and it took an hour to close it..
The antenna starts to lose contact from moisture. The most easy solution, if you want to save money, buy on ebay or aliexpress gps antenna on request "fakra gps antenna" and install it on rns850 main unit. After some time the trip it will work again. First, the cold will be badly caught, if the weather is cloudy, but then it will be all right.
so landed back in uk got car from car park sat nav back to normal, could this have been moisture that's evaporated ?

That's how mine started it could go weeks okay and then lose signal for a number of hours before coming back, then it totally stopped working. I took it into Breeze VW to get it replaced under warranty to then get told that can happen if you use automatic car washes! I was close to ripping his head off, my cars never seen a car wash, and a 4x4 nav system should be able to withstand stronger elements than that, good job I wasn't paying or I would have just walked out! It dose look like yours maybe on the way out?

What caused the antenna to fail, was it possibly rain ?
