Hello everyone,

I am not too good at this fourm thingy and my spelling is naff too
I have an 05 plate V6 with 53thousand miles on it I am the second owner.

it's been serviced at regular intervals albeit no longer with the stealer dealers but my local garage who have used all genuine vw parts it has never been off road  and now it seems that the propshaft bearing has gone! VW are not interested as it has not been serviced by one of their dealers  anyhow my ? is Is it possible to just get a propshaft bearing or do I have to buy the whole thing, my mechanical technical knowledge is not good when it comes down to this kind of thing. If I do have to buy a propshaft can anyone recommend where from is it possible to buy one from a say a breaker. The garage should get the propshaft off later on today to make a better diagnois

I live in montrose scotland btw so if there is anyone out there local ish to me that would be helpful too

thank you
Jules

Ps sorry if this posted up in the wrong section.

Jules - if you click on the "search" link (top right between "FAQ" and "Members" and type in propshaft, you will find several threads covering the options of replacement bearing or replacement shaft.

Either way it seems like it is a reasonably common issue - and the general response from VW is ... tough

You will also see lots of advise regarding 3rd party warranties.

HTH

EDIT: the thread probably needs to be moved to the bugs and fixes area

A new propshaft fitted works out around ?850 at your local garage [the shaft''s about ?600-?650 if I remember aright] and ?1000 at the VW dealer.

Send a PM to bnl - he can tell you how to do a repair which involves cutting the shaft in half, removing the bearing, replacing it, rewelding the prop shaft and getting it trued and balanced again.

Found the topic:

http://mytreg.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t= ... 970#p62528

The shaft bearings seem to go at around 60-70K which is why I wouldn't go for a secondhand one unless it comes off a known low mileage wreck.

What mileage has your car done by the way?

Well thanks for the advice so far guys it's been really helpful

How much!!!!!!!!  OMG!! my car has done 53thd it had 30th on it when I bought 3 years ago.

I have just spoken with my local garage manie ( scottish for car repair man
) he has been doing some investigations and has found someone in glasgow who will do said repair, to propshaft he seems to do quite a lot of them as its a common problem, surprise surprise. I assume its what you were talking about taking propshaft apart replacing bearing and something else as well, drrr can't remember what he said now  anyhow ?180 + vat to have it reconditioned sounds ok to me.

What do you all think

er have'nt worked out how your pm's work on here yet but give me time and I will

thanks again guys for your quick and helplful replies.

My car has done 54k now so I am watching this thread with interest.

Do you have the details of the man in Glasgow for my future reference should I need him? I am based in Fort William so Glasow is not too far away to go...........well in Scottish Highland terms anyway hehe.

All the best with the recon. You must let us know how you get on.

Hi everyone,

Here is an update of the propshaft problems

I have now got the car back, it's running like a dream
no noise anymore
the propshaft was reconditioned by a chap in Glasgow who really knows his stuff according to my garage manie it was done by a compnay called P & J Propshafts Ltd commercial vehicles and accessories & Parts contact telephone number is 0141 883 2206 ask for Pat very very helpful.

My local garage manie Sandy at Lochside vehicle services tel 01307 468895 in Forfar charged me in total ?503.00 inc VAT and that was also including the full service on the vehicle too!
Brilliant so very pleased with the outcome and very pleased with all your helpful comments too guys.

That said however, a vehicle of this calibre should not be having propshaft problems with that amount of milage on it do the manufacturers build thigs nowadays so they break down at after a specific point of miles done?! seems like it to me.

?503 all in - including a service - is EXTREMELY good value given that a VW garage will charge ?900-?1000 just for the prop!!

And, yes, you're right, given the number of folk on here [and elsewhere] reporting prop problems at 60-70K, this would now be a class action fault in the US.

Great result mate and that's why you need a warranty for a car like this
