i'm having problems with the sat nav on my car see photos below, it just keeps saying no navi cd, it has a genuine cd and sometimes it will work fine. is it worth trying a new cd?

If it's an original CD from 2004 then chances are its not in good shape.
It looks like the unit can still read audio CDs OK?

You could try to copy an image of the NAV CD onto a new Blank CD or else do a trawl for a newer version of the CD.

From what I can remeber, the CD based NAv units ar emore difficult to find replacements for than the DVD versions.
Also you may need to unlock th unit before your copied CD works.

Have a look at GPS Underground for some additional info / tips.

Mine did that, tried new DVD's, stripped it down and cleaned the head, no joy. Fitted a Panasonic unit with Bluetooth etc instead, way better.

Some of the android based units have got very good integration with steering wheel controls. In one of my other cars - audi a3 - I switched out the head unit for a Chinese made android unit and it's completely plug and play, has sat nav, dvd playback, sd card slot, Bluetooth etc etc and looks very OEM . Really awesome device, I'd be surprised if there weren't similar devices available that would be suitable.

The problem with the Touareg is the steering wheel controls are multi-function, with the exception of volume which is dedicated to the radio only. The other buttons change function dependent on what is displayed on the drivers display. Unless the Android units fully integrate into can bus and VW's computer (and I don't believe any do) getting the steering wheel controls to function is impossible.

I spent a considerable time on this including data logging traffic on the can bus to try and emulate the messages to get the driver display to function but in the end, gave up.

The unit I have on the audi is from erisin on eBay. It's not a that dissimilar a problem as the audi steering wheel controls also vary function according to input. On this unit you can map what each of the buttons do in each function yourself. It has a canbus module to converting the head unit signals to canbus equivalents. My audi is an 09 plate so relatively recent.
I had an issue with my first unit, I broke it being clumsy with install. They offered immediately to replace or refund without question which hints at their customer service attitude. It works perfectly now all controls so what I want. Only limitation I can think of is lack of input to the cluster display. I just had a quick hunt around for units compatible with an 2004 touareg and 2 of the 3 I found claimed full steering wheel control compatibility. I have no view on the validity of those claims but simply suggest it's worth further investigation.

OK, on the Touareg with the standard fit sat nav when you select the CD in the driver display the buttons on the right hand side of the wheel the scroll wheel will select next / prev track. If you change the display to be one of the driving computers the same scroll wheel will change the function displayed. In your Audi, how do you select the radio screen which in the Touareg isn't displayed when the radio isn't there? If as is the case with the Touareg the radio codes are not sent out on canbus without that screen being displayed so the prev/next function varies as do the codes from it. Unless the Audi works totally different to the VW I don't see how it can work. Even the VW units don't work!

Having done this exercise at length and a lot of research into this I would suggest it's a waste of time. It is of course up to the op if he wants to waste his time????
