Oil pressure problem, oil pickup pipe location?

I really need help now.

Rebuilt the tandem pump and rocker gasket to resolve oil leaks.

Now I get oil pressure, stop engine. And it does seem pretty dry up the top now, like a smear of oil on finger when inside the oil filler hole.

I've googled about loads and had a look at the following:

1.Replaced oil pressure sensor

2.Checked the pcv and the valve seemed intact, but the cap didn't stay back on so have ordered a new one now anyway to come ina. Few days. But don't think it was an issue anyway.

3.Had a good look around for splits in any pipes creating extra vacume. Haven't found any, I probably could spend a little more time looking though.

I suspect the oil pickup is blocked or oil pump gone (not so much the oil pump maybe as on idle it doesn't warn me about pressure, only when around 2k revs)

In the pictures attached, can anyone tell me roughly where the oil pickup pipe is located in the sump? I have circled the 2 holes (sump plug and oil level sensor) I know I could gain entry with a camera I have to try and see if the little filter that will be on the end is blocked, and possibly move some of it. But I'd rather someone who has had this apart before pinpoint better where I will actually find the pipe in the sump so I'm not just pointing around in all directions.

I'm not really sure I could mess around with engine and subframe etc etc just to remove the sump. I don't have a support or crane and on a gravel drive.

I'm praying I can get my camera in, see a blocked pickup, and use the little pick as a scraper on it to unblock it, and then engine flush it.

I sort of feel it's a bit pointless using engine flush in its current state when I don't think it's really pumping any oil around?

I did see on the interweb about pouring petrol down and leave to clean what could be blocking it and draining and airing out, but I'm not convinced on that idea like

Cars not been usable for over 1 month and I really need to get it sorted so any input is welcome

Just a speculative shot but Vauxhall insignias have a common problem similar to this caused by the o ring seal between the pickup pipe and the sump leaking when cold. This reduces the oil pickup vacuum from the pump causing low oil pressure until the oil heats up.

Thank you. I forgot I did read something about the o ring for this pipe. I'm gathering this is going to be inside mind.

It is something I could try get my camera to look at. Do you have any idea the location of where it exits the sump on that photo I attached. Then gives me an idea where I'm pointing camera.

I sort of hope I can spot obvious issues inside the sump so I can then decide what to do, be it I have to get some stuff to tackle it myself, or find someone to recover the car and pay them to do it. If I find nothing though, sort of makes my decision on next step a bit more difficult. So trying to find as much info as I can to make the best decision haha

Even better if someone knows how to remove the sump without following the VW instructions of supporting engine and removing subframe etc

I would say, such it up (no pun intended :ROFLMAO:) and find a local specialist who can help, this is a sump off job! I suspect that the pickup is blocked with sludge, or the O ring has failed, possibly the pickup pipe has fractured, especially as you have oil pressure on tickover

Yes I think you are right. I'm going to have a look with the camera anyway tomorrow as it costs nothing.

I don't suppose you or anyone knows of any way to jack the engine up slightly to allow enough room to remove the sump? If I can create a bit of room then I can have a proper look and work out what's up. It's the damn subframe in the way is my issue

I thought I'd replied to this earlier but it doesn't appear to have gone through.
It all seems to be a rather strange approach if you don't mind me saying. First you need to prove what the issue is.. whether you do actually have low oil pressure or can it be an electrical fault. I'd want to connect an accurate pressure gauge to get a reading of the actual pressure before replacing parts and messing around with cameras. Also don't know of the recent history but is assume that you have changed the oil and filter?

Yeh no problem.

Yeh, well, I only replaced the pressure switch as it was less than a tenna, but, I don't get oil at the top of the engine.

I have changed the oil and filter also. I did drain the oil today and didn't have much success with the camera, stupid thing must have a loose wire.

I did clear out the oil filter housing of oil, like all of it, re filled the oil and ran the engine briefly.

I get an ever so slight smear of oil at the top of the engine, and the oil filter housing did have oil on the bottom of it. However I wouldn't say the oil had rushed in, the walls of the housing were dry, more that it's trickled in from the bottom. So I'm assuming a weak oil pump or blocked pickup maybe.

I do have a oil pressure tester coming tomorrow so can see what it says.

Spoke to a mate who does have access to an engine crane if I need it to help me with removing the sump, but shall see what the oil pressure reading comes to before deciding where to go next.

Unless anyone has any further suggestions for me?

Ive worked on my cars for years, but never so in depth with an engine, and my neighbour always helps me, he's pretty handy with engines. I'd rather try and learn to sort all this out than just pay someone else to do it so all ideas are welcome.

Thanks

I admire your enthusiasm and tenacity to learn but if you don’t know what you are doing, what’s wrong with getting a professional to sort it. It may cost you a few quid but surely that’s better than shelling out for an engine rebuild or a new engine if it seizes up🤔

+1

Access to a lift or pit is crucial for maintaining a Touareg yourself, an hour on a ramp is worth 10 hours lying on your back looking up into the bowels of the many 'bottom' serviceable items (y)

Thanks for your replies. The problem with paying someone else all the time is im a poorly paid civil servant on another ridiculous national pay freeze (I'm actively looking to get out purely over pay, so maybe once I'm out I'll be happier paying someone as I might actually have spare money)

But I will call it quits and pay someone when I'm totally at the end of my capability. But I won't pay someone when I can get hold of an engine hoist to lift the engine a little just to remove the sump.

On the money I'm on, I don't have much choice than to use the garage as a more last resort unfortunately. I'd much rather pay them than be out in the cold haha

At the moment I'm on shared parental leave so to my partner's dislike, I do have all the time in the world until I return to work in January. Not that I'm going to go on that far on my own mind. I'm sick of the cold already so it might be in the garage next week still yet [emoji38]
