Modified Windscreen Wiper Arms

It's been a fairly common complaint that Touareg windscreen wipers have a tendency to miss whole parts of the screen, or leave horrible smear marks right in front of the driver's viewline.

Well, there is some possible good news. It turns out VW has modified the wiper arm assembly and you can get a new set under warranty - providing the dealer agrees that the current wiper setup is deficient.

Took my Touareg into Motorworld Kidlington at the weekend for some unrelated work, and the techie there agreed straight away to order me up a new set under warranty. Will let you know if the situation is improved once they are fitted.

Any idea when the new assembly started turning up on production Tregs? Might give us some idea of whether worth while asking for replacement or not?
I picked up my TREG two weeks ago and seem to have said problems...

I will be making a call to my VW dealership...

GREAT POST!!!!!

Does this also cure the truly 'orrible wiper judder???? Drives swmbo up the wall!!!
Had a call to say they're in, so will plan a trip to have them fitted and report back.
Had the new wiper arms fitted today. Look exactly the same, but the spring that pushes the blade down onto the windscreen is stronger - hence more likelihood of a 'clean sweep' across the glass.

First impressions are that the new arms are a definite improvement over the older version. All seems very smooth and no judder that I could see / hear. It even looks like some of the smearing that was always left right in front of my face might also be sorted.

Since I also asked for new wiper blades to be fitted at the same time (?15+ vat each!), I can't say whether the arm alone makes all the difference, but the combination of new arms and blades appears to have done the trick.

Thanks to Graham as Motorworld as always for a fast and neat job.
Took mine in earlier this week - diagnosed as needing new blades only. I was sceptical but new blades have sorted out the judder.
I'll have to go and have a look at mine tomorrow and see how easy, or if at all possible, it is just to replace the springs rather than the whole arm.
OK took the rag down the dealers and enquired with their tech regards these wiper arms as mine only clear water from areas on the screen passengers look through, indeed he replied there have been some modified rubbers which are softer but not replacement arms? but said that these rubbers? will improve the performance which is currently dangerous!! so I await the call when they get the parts in and we'll see.... hopefully, pardon the pun.

I got new arms and rubbers from Listers Stratford without quibble !!
There are modified wiper arms available and should be fitted FOC under warranty mostly on 2003/4 model years, don't be put off by sloppy dealers who can't be bothered to find out..
Its nice to know these things as fact, trouble is all I ever seem to deal with is sloppy dealers, nothing is ever honest and up front!!! now and again you think you find a good dealer but the next time the car is in you end up wanting to give someone a slap!!! I am absolutely sick to the back teeth of listening to some know f all pretty thing telling me all about what the problem is not knowing I am a mechanic and know full well what she is saying is sh!te..... arrrgghhh when will it change, all you want is a straight feckin answer instead its always the long way round to getting what you want!!! My clio v6 is also in under warranty at the moment as they are humming and ahhing as to whether they will rebuild or replace the knackered gearbox I know what I'd prefer but I'm also argueing with them that the clutch is shot aswell and they might as well replace that too but they seem to think that its ok to slip on a change into second under power there answer was to drive it slower????? I'm a little confused was that what they designed a 3.0 clio for?? driving slowly!!!! I despare at these dealers and the fact we have to fight for everything under warranties!!!! :bashwall: :bashwall:

Whenever I find an item available free under warrenty, I always print off the thread and take it with me to show the dealer - just in case they try to fob me off !!!

The wipers were available "only if the customer knows they are available" said the Techie to me. In other words, its up to us to find out via the internet what we can have, and go and politely ask !!

(PS, I didnt wiper arms but I did need wiper blades. Might as well get them for free.....Ha Ha Ha)
Well went to the dealers today in the thunder storms and had the new rubbers fitted, went out tried the wipers and hey presto.... just the same, so promptly went back in and got the tech out. He still does'nt know of any modified arms but got me the arm of a brand new sale car and it has sorted the problem so who knows.

Any part number visible / obvious? I assume you got a receipt (even tho' it's an FOC item)?
Paddy, yes have got the receipt, only got the claim number for the wiper arms , I am sure if you speak to Tricia nicely you will get some cooperation. Unfortunately each individual claim has its own claim number. I will look at the wiper arms to see if there is a part number, I will look when the vehicle returns later.

I don't know what the previous part numbers were to compare, they work really well my suspicion is as Matt eluded to it maybe the springs that do the job. I did ask for the old ones to compare the differences, but it was claimed on warranty items have to returned. :glare: :glare: :glare:

Top effort - many thanks.
This is just what i was looking for as the wipers drive you mad, I've just checked mine and it looks like the one's you've had fitted are an upgraded version as mine have exactlly the same number on them but with a "C" on the end which would lead you to believe that they have been updated.

Excellent post.
I have sent these part numbers to the dealer and he tells me they are still the same part number

we will see what happens
