Hi all has anybody had these problems, for the last week my pasenger side sounds like i have a puncture, as if i am driving the car on the rims, but there is no sign at all that there is a problem with the tyre, the knocking noise tends to start between 20 and 40 mph, the other issue is when i steer the car clockwise the car also tends to make noises any suggestions what the problem is.

Regardless of trying to find out on here what might be wrong, with a noise like this I'd get it into a garage ASAP. As with any noise, the longer you leave it the more damage might be occuring.

Fingers crossed it's something simple. Please let us know the outcome.

Many years ago, a friend took his nearly new Mercedes back to the garage after a few weeks to complain of a funny kind of rumbling noise that seemed to go from the nearside of the car to the offside of the car going round left hand corners, and vice versa going round right hand corners.

When he went to pick the car up in the evening the mechanic presented him with one of his own golf balls.

It had got inside the channel that ran across the car and upon which sat the two front seats. The ball had entered through a hole missing its grommet!

thanks after speaking to VW this is becoming a common problem, they even qouted me by saying when you go round a small roundabout at a slow speed going clockwise there is an issue with a cruching noise that i have been having, they mentioned a couple of terms, transfer box stepper motor or a bearing on the prop shaft. its getting looked at tonight so should have an answer.

The prop shaft bearing is usually felt as a vibration through the central armrest. Sometimes it take a while to develop, but other times the failure is immediate and VERY noticeable as the car is undriveable. The usual failure mileage is 60,000 to 70,000. VW's normal response is new prop shaft at around ?900-?1,000 but it is possible to get it repaired and there are threads on here about how and where to do it for less than half the cost of a new prop shaft [or "drive shaft" in American English].

A crunching sounds more like the stepper motor. ~Sometimes the problem can be fixed by a software upgrade. Here's something from a US Treg techie - his "passenger side" is our driver side by the way!

"If your t-reg binds at low speeds like turning into/ backing out of a parking spot you need a new stepper motor. The old part number has a "A" at the end of the number. New style built by different company with beefier internals has a "C" at the end. the new style is build by globe motors.
Its located on the center differential on the passenger side. You can see it if you get on the ground and look from the side behind the front door. i have replaced at least 60-70 of theese in the past year all on 04 models! 2006 and late 2005 have the new "c" style."

Thanks for your advice, i had it looked at last night and again a close look today, it sounds like it is the drive shaft after all, it wont be going to vw direct so i will hope my mechanic can do he's best. with regards to the stepper motor should i look to get this changed as well and what would the cost be to do this. is this something that you do by the way.

Many thanks

When you say "drive shaft" do you mean the main prop shaft or are yout talking about a shaft going to an invidual wheel?

I wouldn't change the stepper motor unless there's a problem. When I looked at mine after following up on a couple of threads a while back, I discovered it had obviously been changed [I bought the car secondhand] as there was a date of manufacture on it nearly 3 years younger than the car.

So get out, get under and have a good look - or get your mechanic to look and report when he has the car in on the ramp.

The replacement of the transfer box also resolves most of the issues in most 2003/4/5 it was a considerable cost to Volkswagen. The stepper motors are less common replacement, it was considered at the time stepper motors were the symptoms rather than the cause.

Morning got the result back last night, the issue is replacing the middle bearing on the prop shaft, so not as bas as first thought, glad i didnt go to a VW dealer as the view with them was to replace the prop shaft at a cost between ?900 and ?1000. So should be back on the roads soon.

Have you done the search on here for prop shaft bearing replacement where a couple of good specialists were identified?

Fine if you're happy with your own chap, but if he should run into problems help is at hand.

thanks i was struggling to find them, if you have them to hand could you pass on the details, my mechanic has tried to get the bearing but is struggling to get the part on its own, VW have offered to sell the whole part for ?800 which is not the solution.

In advanced search type in: propshaft, bearing, replacement

http://www.mytreg.com/forums/showthread.php?5924-Propshaft-bearing&highlight=propshaft%2C+bearing%2C+replacement

http://www.mytreg.com/forums/showth...at!&highlight=propshaft,+bearing,+replacement

Please could you change the title of your post to include the word propshaft? It may help others in future.

And here's a supplier and a fitter too. I just googled: touareg propshaft bearing and clicked on pictures
