Has anyone had any experience of these? Specialist Servicing for BMW AUDI VW and MECS (NOT KWIK FIT etc). They say tat the warranty is not affected etc and they have all the diagnostic equipment and they are way cheaper.

there are plenty of independant VW garages around the country, there is one on the other side of the road from my local stealer, which is run by the ex service manager and a technician from the stealer....very cheeky!!!

Might be good to have a section for independent garages who are Treg competent. More and more owners now as the Treg gets a bit older and the prices of early models drop nearer to the 10 - 12k mark.

I Agree Cass. I used to use an independent specialist on my Porsche and providing they use the approved spares you could save a few quid.

THe downside of using an independent during the VW 3 year warranty period is you will probably not get any goodwill gestures from VW GB should you have a problem just outside the warranty term. Saving a hundred quid or so won't seem such as good idea then IF you should run into such a problem.

Some buyers may not like the idea of not seeing a full VW service history either on a relatively new car especially if they don't know the indie used.

Nooby I'd agree with that for any cars up to 3 years old. However after that, when out of warranty, I would always argue that independent specialists tend to care more about the quality of their work than a main dealer and hence are often preferable on the service history....

The issue of dealer v independent service history is always a moot point. I went through this with my old Porker, using OPC's for servicing, for the all important dealer stamp, and independent specialists for all other work. Always had great service from both, but independents were much less expensive and the work was just as good.

Personally, I'll stick with VW dealers at the moment but when out of warranty, I would consider a good independent specialist for non-servicing work. Owners of cars which are now coming up to 6+ years old may not be so inclined to stick with the dealers but good independents may be few and far between because of the complicated nature of the Treg.

My car is over 6 years old. I don't think I will go to main dealers which charge me ?580 (VW Chiswick) or ?760 (VW Twickenham). Following this thread, I have contacted a specialist in Harrow (A40) for the same service for just ?230 (including VW parts, labour and VAT). Do you think the service quality will differ that as the prices change?

I'm sorry - I should have made myself clearer.

I completely agree with others that AFTER the 3 years are up, go to an independent by all means, though I've been able to stick with [excellent] VW Windrush at Maidenhead 5 easy minutes from M4 J8/9 by offering them the chance to price match.

Don't forget that this is a competitive market and that dealers often make more from servicing than selling a car (unless you are a complete berk and pay list or near !!!).

VW offer a price match service, so don't forget that - link here: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/service-promise/like-for-like

Got to do your research and be happy with your dealer - like Nooby says, if you find a good'un - well done and give them due praise. All too easy to criticise : )

Can anybody recommend an Indy in Kent? Totally agree with Porsche servicing, I have owned a few over the years and I would say the independents are better. It costs a lot for main dealers to keep those shiny showrooms and they pass that on to us. Of course it is advisable to use main dealers for the first 3 years.
