I did 7k on the original Pirelli tyres and they were completely knackered !(less than 0.5mm!) Dealer replaced them with Michelin Latitude Sports, and with 5k on them they seem as though they will last a fair bit longer. I was charged 50% of the nett cost of the tyres, presumeably VW stood the rest under warranty. This is the one thing that would put me off having another Treg. I have had several Discoveries and Range Rovers and always got 30-40k miles from a set of tyres. There must be a problem somewhere for these vehicles to be so hard on tyres.

The original Michelin Diamaris (?) only lasted 12,000 miles but I replaced them with Goodyear Wranglers (used previously on my Discovery) and 25,000 miles later still looking good for another 5,000. Slightly noisier / harder feel but at only ?85 per tyre last 2.5 times longer and a lot cheaper!
Cannot find a Hankook stockist near me

Conti were on from new and lasted only 16k miles so I changed to Hankook Ventus 255/55 and just changed the fronts at 49k miles with at least another 5k left on the other two

I think we know better than VW how to pick tyres

i've got Michelin Latitude Sports on mine, brand new when purchased, now covered about 6k and they seem on course for 20-25k per set.

Jim

EDIT

The above were shagged after 12-13K, now have toyo proxes fitted (275/45/19)

I have run Michelin Diamaris (~18000), and Continental (still waiting to see on mileage), interesting to see that the Hankook's were running for so much longer, has anyone any comment on grip, and noise.
The Diamaris are brilliant on the Nurburgring! Loads of grip and feel.

PLEASE, PLEASE: give the FULL NAME OF THE TYRE, not just the maker, the TYRE SIZE and your TREG MODEL.

Yes, I'm shouting as the info isn't much use to others unless you give the full details!

Just saying " Im running Hankooks" ain't enough info for people to maske informed decisions.

Cheers and Happy New Year

Hankook Ventus 255/55 R18 109Y

25K so far with 5mm total tread depth sill remaining. Tread wear is even across the whole face of the tyre and consistant on all 4 tyres.

so, that's about 8K/mm (not sure the tread depth when new, but guess about 8mm)? There's another 3mm of wear left before I hit the tread depth inticators, so that'll be another 24K.

So, I'm hoping for between 45K and 50K miles.

Guess what I'll be having fitted next time?

PS, the Pirelli Scorpions fitted when I had the vehicle new, were changed after 11K miles, and probably only had another 2K of motoring left in them. VW shared the cost of fitting a new set of boots (of my choice) and a free 4 wheel allignment. However, I'm pretty sure the tracking was spot on as the pirellis were at least wearing evenly.

My Treg has got the factory fitted Bridgestones Dueler Hp 275/40/R20 106Y. The car has now covered just over 16K miles and the rubber looks 50-60% worn, I have read lots of reviews on the General Grabber UHP as a replacement when they're due. Seen them for around ?160 each fitted.

I bougt my V10 Touareg 1 year old with 6000 miles on the clock.
I had to buy another set of Pirrelli 275/45/19 at 16K
Then again at 27K
Now at 37K they are down to the wear bars.
So V 10 Touaregs eat tyres by comparison to other 4 x 4's

David,General Grabber UHP and Toyo Proxes are available in your size from Event Tyres.
They will give you better mileage.
There are numerous posts from members regarding tyre wear, the Grabber UHp's,as used by Touareg Unlimited are a good choice.

Vredestian Wintrac 4 Xtreme 255 x 55 x 18

36,000 miles

?105 +vat each fitted and balanced.

I can't complain at that.

(mainly motorways miles)

The VW supplied Conti's lasted 9000 miles under the same driving.

Highly recommend

Well, slightly difficult to work out. Bought 4 Hankook Ventus 255/55 R18 109Y tyres in 2005 at 22742 mls, changed the fronts (at 3 mm) at 51333mls, and swapped the older back tyres to the front, while putting the new tyres unto the rear. The fronts still have 4mm left at 59,000mls.

I'm a bit surprised by kenford44's post.

It seems to be generally accepted on this and other Treg forums that you should not have more than a 2 or 3 mm tread wear difference between any of the 4 tyres as it can lead to expensive problems with the 4wd system.

Given that new tyres have 9 mm of tread and a worn tyre as described in the post is likely to have 3 or maybe 4 mm at most, then shouldn't kf44 have changed all 4 tyres at the same time?

I used to get 60K out of Michelins on my original Range Rovers but it was mostly motorway work at a steady 77 mph.

And yes, we certainly do know how to choose better tyres than VW .... though folk still post tyre threads in the General Discussion area rather than the Tyres and Wheels section!!

Just replaced VW Original fitments of Continental Cross Contact UHP's - 255 / 55 R18 109Y at 9800 miles with approx 3mm tread depth remaining.
Replacements are full set of HANKOOK VENTUS ST - 255 / 55 R18 109Y XL rated. 8mm new tread depth and treadwear rating of 420 ( against 280 for Conti's.)
Note that they are classed as a M + S tyre and Initial impression is that roadholding and noise is certainly matching the Conti's. Happy with total fitted price of ?440 all inclusive and looking forward to a decent increased tyre life.

Same tyre as mine, exactly...
I've now done nearly 30K on them and I reckon there's at least another 15K of legal wear left... Long live the Honkook.
