pic enlarged, if you want more give me your email address and i'll send some high res close ups.
I bought the car as a demo and it was already on it but personally I probably wouldn't have specced it as its a bit of a pain in the arse opening the door! You first have to open the wheel carrier which opens on side hinges (so you have to have 3-1/2ft clearance behind the door to allow you to open it) then the boot opens as normal. I also can't seem to open it whilst the keys are still in ignition, but i havent played around with it yet to see if i can get round this.
It is nice to know however that I have a full size spare that i don't have to mess about with air compressors etc and the additional storage space is also very good.

Isn't the theory that you have to have the right letters at each end of the word...?

Anyway, don't show the kids.....it'll really confuse them!

Fiona, I should hope the spare wheel doesn't get in the road......that'd mean it had fallen off!!!

P.S. Nice pics Steve!

Chris, would appreciate some details on your roof mounted DVD player.

Where fitted, how much, how is it mounted, what sort of job to install, can it be removed without leaving holes etc.

Many thanks

Hi Steve

Well we got the dealer to fit it when we bought the car. Since we were buying out of "UK Stock" rather than wait for a factory order, its not OE. Having looked into the options we decided that a single roof mount was more cost effective than dual headrest mounts, but thats obviously personal choice and really depends how much you want to spend. The cost of ours was £500 + dreaded, fully fitted, including remote controls for screen and player and 2 sets of wireless headsets which I thought was pretty fair.

Screen is, as I say, roof mounted and looks and works well. Only issue I have is with the mounting of the DVD player - its in the passenger footwell. We planned to have it in the glovebox but it just wouldn't quite fit
So, this was next best option. No point putting it somewhere like the boot as then you can't change discs while travelling.

All in all its definitely worth its weight - only problem is that I have to find things to talk about with SWMBO cos the kids are so quiet

Hope that helps

ww - if that was directed towards me with the DVD, and not the external mount wheel, YES! Dealer arranged it prior to us taking delivery. It was done by another company which dealer uses - had done a few installs before ours. Price was £500 + VAT. Headrest screens would have been £1000, plus longer job. If you want 2 players, or one DVD and one PS2, then price just keeps going up!!

I figured that we would get £500 worth of benefit and equally its not too much more than a portable system (which would be a much less tidy solution anyway).

Ross - its no problem at all, very little intrusion. If you went for a larger screen then it might but this (5") is fine.

Hope that helps!

Chris,

A very "tidy" job, look's a much better job than the over priced VW one.
can I ask who did the dvd fitting work ?
was by Uplands on north rd ?
in Cardiff tomorrow would like to check them out,
thanks in advance.

Hi WT.

Sorry, this response may be a bit late. But anyway, I don't actually know!! But if you want to give Cardiff Volkswagen a ring I would have thought someone could tell you who they use....Uplands could well be a good bet.

B&B Auto services in the Canton area (of Cardiff before anyone wisecracks!) have a good reputation but may be a little pricey...

HTH (a bit!)
