Hi guys, I've got the 4.2 TDI Treg, i borrowed it to a friend and he brought it back with the front diff broken. It's just making a huge cracking and vibrating noise which just made me stop immediately. What I need to hear is, if I disconnect the propshaft, will the car continue driving without activating the diff or will it just not work at all? I'm asking because I'm thinking about driving it home and having it repaired from home.

I assume its a 7P model. You need to get it transported home on a flatbed. The centre torsen diff will provide little drive to the rear with the front prop shaft disconnected and will be rapidly destroyed

Hope you are making your ‘friend’ pay for the repairs 🤔

Before doing anything I would confirm that the front drive shafts are all OK and the noise is truly coming from inside the diff. Its not unknown for the inner end of the front drive shafts shaft to pull out of the internal spring clip that secures it into the diff output, or not to have been properly fitted into the clip in the first place

cheers
