My 03 Treg is in to investigate that nasty knocking / cluncking noise - I suspect stepper motor / transfer box after reading posts on here.

Also asked them to look at a ticking noise from the around the top vents....quite annoying as it's not always in time with the music....

Out of warranty, but do have a 3rd party one (warranties Online) - so this will be a good test to see if they will pay out.
Am also prepared to try and argue that VW should cover the costs - may need some help here.

On the Plus side - got a cracking V6 TDi as a courtesy car - WOW! , I'll say it again WOW..

The word back so far is

The Rear Tyre Rolling Radius is out of Tolerence - whatever the hell that means....

Just waiting to hear if warranty covers it.

Also new front and rear brake pads and front sensors needed, but that can't be causing the knocking noise - can it?

Just booked mine in for a clunking noise from the transmission.
SODS law really as I stated two weeks ago on the forum that I had not experienced any problems

The clunking happens mostly whilst crawling along in traffic. The clunk happens approx every 8-10 metres.
I also get it at times going around corners / roundabouts

Yesterday (having covered 140 motorway miles) I went to pull off after stopping for a few mins and the judder from the front was Fcuking unbelievable. I got out of the car and checked the front tyres thinking they had both gone flat. Started the car again fearing the worst??. But it was fine just back to the normal clunk.

Its not the brakes with mine as they have not long been replaced.

SPLODGE Is this the same symtons as yours / could it be the stepper motor

Splodge mine is just still in warranty but I have been reading the threads on where to go when the warranty runs out with interest

I have just taken out the RAC GOLD cover
Seems like a good deal for the ?469.00 a year cost spread over 12 interest free monthly payments.
Claim limit is to the value of the vehicle- payment per day for a hire car ? hotel cover ? and full RAC recovery included.

Yourholeisourgoal - May sound daft but have you checked your wheels are fully tightened. Judder and knocking can be caused by a loose wheel.

yourholeisourgoal - yep sounds fairly similar.

latest is this
spoke to the garage, the master tech says the front tyres have a difference in tread depth of 2mm, which is probably causing everything to be out of alignment.
Also something was tightened up (can't remember what).
They have test driven and the noise is better (!), and if I get 2 new front tyres it will be sorted.

Well says me, those 2 front tyres are only 6 weeks old, so if they are that knackered already there must be something else wrong - transfer box perhaps.

oh yes, says the nice lady at the garage, I'll get back to you.

still waiting.

Hum.. my tyres have done 16,000 and are maybe the 2mm difference you mention front to back.
That said i have had most 4x4s on the market and all have had worn tyres at differing levels without
bollocks-ing the drive system.
I hope this wont turn me against the treg it is the best i have driven by a long way.
 ................. ..................... .....................
No i still love it

Mine goes in tomorrow with exactly this problem. I have noticed that the front tyres are worn on the inside of the treads, and I get exactly the same clonk. Spooky!

It's a V6TDi, 6months and 11000 miles old.

I'll post how I get on.

Oh, and I am having a fairly comprehensive go about the satnav deficiencies too.

hope you all get it sorted.....

Uhm..my March 05 R5 goes in on Monday for 4 days (@15K). at 10K all tyres were eve on tyre wear
3 of 4 tyres have no tread on outside edge but middle and inside noe fairly even (increased tryre pressures by 3 psi) 4mm on middle still so if they were wearing evenly would do 25K i recon.
drivetrain shunt 10-15 mph lift off on light throttle and then gently accelerate big snatch...
on rough stuff on full left front "skips"
reverse full left lock a judderring if brakes are left on
on light to derate throttle the 2-3rd change takes 3-5 seconds and is like the worlds worst clutch slipping gearchange all other changes 3-4-5-6 are superb.

Garage tell me it "sounds like you need to have the firmware updated" will see what happens next week...

getting new set of winter tyres together as i hope to be seeing what its like on the white stuff soon and i dont want to knacker ?600 of winter tyres in one winter.....hope its as good on the whte stuff as it is on black, green and brown surfaces...

Make sure they do a full alignment & get the green/yellow/red printout to prove it - you wouldn't be the first person on here to have suffered...

The ticking noise around the top vents will be the stepper motors for the HVAC system - I will let you know if it's accepted as an extended warranty item as mine has just been diagnosed with the same problem...

xanders - got fingers crossed...

Just recovering from a phone call from the Stealer was a bit taken aback...

Needs new gearbox, transfer box, alignment and 4 tyres they are awaiting the go ahead from VW (tyres are being asked for as goodwill by stealer they are veyr confidnet that this will not be a prob evne after 15K miles)

My March 05 car went in for wear on outer edge of 3 tyres, bump thump out of left junctions, i commented on the gearchange 2-3 which takes several seconds and is like a clutch being slipped.

its very driveable so should get it back tomorrow whilest we await new parts...i miss it having a golf at the moment...its true you dont know what youve got till its gone...

I only took it in cause im fussy about everything being 100%........

-Well got it back today ive been asked to monitor the gearbox for 2 weeks..

VW asked for new firmware to be fitted to the Transfer box MAster technican did this and still faulty so that will be replaced...

Gearbox - It does two things that i questioned: 1) at low speed 5-10 mph when you coast and then accelerate gently it thumps through the whole car it was very slight, they have changed oil (VW wanted to know if it had lost oil- no it haddn't and it it was overheating no it isnt) 2) 2-3 change takes ages this is to do with somehting winding up in torque converter cant recall exact details but is normal... 4-5 moderate acceration it is like a clutch slippng number changes on dash, rpm increase by about 250 rpm then it changes in a sluring fashion..

Any way thee is new firnmware since Mar 05 for the gearbox this has been updated and all the symptons are now more pronounced...

So Oct 9th they are coming to collect it...to change Gearbox, Transfer box and awaiting response on request Tyres as goodwill...

Mine has been in today for the same clunking fault. Had a problem to get it to do it whilst the VW tech was in the car
but in eventually it cluncked.

After four hours i got a call to say it was ready to collect.
They have done a software download and fingers crossed, it seems to have worked.

I had noticed it only a handful of times, however since the firmware update yesterday i wanxst sure oit was going to get to work this morning. It was thiumpoing sop bad i actually stopped to see if the bolts had sheared off and fallen off... it is slurring the 4-5 change at around 45mph when going up an incline and on 3 occasions what not sure what gear ot should select...

left message with the VW garage and a driver is on his way with a replacement car they are recovering mine...

i'm told that comes from the transfer box the drivetrain thump - shunt but ive now been told diffeent things by different technicians so im not enitrely sure anymore..
