Hi. New here but searching in desperation for some answers. I have had a 03 V8 Sport which I've owned for 5 Years. 59kmiles. Recently it began to occasionally make a high pitched whine/squeal noise whe travelling at over 30mph. This has become more frequent. It generally remains the same pitch/loudness regardless of speed, gear or when accelerating or braking.

I've just taken it in to Dovercourt Battersea and they have said it needs the front differential replacing and the quote is ?3,000. Needless to say I'm staggered!

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm slightly cynical about almost all of the main dealers. Every time I have had the car serviced they have suggested I have brake pad and/or disks replaced and once this was only 4 weeks after I had had all pads relaced by Kwick Fit!

The car drives OK the noise is obviously a concern but it just doen't seem reasonable or plausable that it should cost ?3k for the complete differential when in all likelyhood it is a bearing problem....

Help!

Nasty, sorry about that.

You need a second and third opinion before doing anything, that's for sure. As you suggested you need to find a proper mechanic who can replace the relevant part(s) instead of the whole unit. Good luck.

Thanks. Any suggestions as to Touareg specialists I could call around South West London?

(i'd be prepared to spread the net wider if necessary!)

I've yet to find an independent Treg specialist.

Unlike Land Rover where there are loads and plenty of firms providing cheaper spares too, the Treg has not been built in sufficient numbers to attract this kind of support for older cars as they fall out of warranty and, due to the high dealer prices, out of the VW servicing net.

If you are prepared to take a couple of hours, go and see VW Windrush at Maidenhead - about 4 minutes from J8/9 on the M4. Give them a call first though to make sure you see the Treg guys. Others on here have used them too and rate them. One Tregger is uncle, I think, to the younger lad there.
