Hello,

I have a 2006 2.5 R5 Diesel Touareg.

At the weekend a warning came on stating insufficient coolant.
Upon inspection the coolant bottle was empty but there was no signs of any leak anywhere.
I filled it back up to MAX (took 2lt of fluid), I had to drive home around 120 miles when I got back and the engine cooled down, it had dropped between MAX and MIN.

I have been trawling the forums to figure out where the coolant could be going and common issues reported are EGR cooler, water pump or head gasket etc

To funnel my problem down other symptoms have have are:

White smoke on high revs (have noticed this for a few weeks).

No sign of coolant in the oil as no mayonnaise looking gunk, also no increase in the oil level.

I unclipped the air pipe that connects into the EGR valve / inlet manifold and can see signs of coolant lying in the pipe and at the base of the EGR valve.

Based on these symptoms would I be right in thinking this is a fault in the EGR cooler? Is coolant leaking into exhaust gas and then into the inlet manifold/exhast?

Its slightly worrying finding coolant in the EGR valve, am I at risk of hydrolock?
With 2 lts of coolant missing it mostly must have gone out the exhaust.

Can anyone help advise on this? Am I on the right track?

Thanks,

Jon

The longest of long shots (as this is 6 years old and your one and only post) but...
I also have a 2006 2.5 R5 Diesel Touareg with an 'Insufficient Coolant' warning and no sign of obvious leaks (or oil/water mixing in oil or coolant). The first time it happened a few weeks ago the coolant was on the low side and I didn't think much of it but now it's happened again.

On the off chance that you see this - did you ever find/fix the problem? was it the EGR cooler?

Or does anyone else have any info?

I would check the water pump isn't leaking first, especially if no signs of mayonnaise or coloured exhaust smoke / vapour.

Water pumps slowly failing & leaking as you drive, sometimes don't leave evidence behind on the drive unless you check just after you have parked up following a descent drive
