Help
I've just read my registration Document (V5C) for my Altitude 3.0L V6 TDI purchased new in October and in it the CO2 is stated as 262g/km. The handbook & web state this to be 244g/km. Before I contact the DVLC and ask them to correct it - can any experienced people out there tell me that there is an explanation, I'm being silly or tell me your V5C is the same???
I don't want to pay more road tax than I can help. I've noticed it's got warmer since I've done 12,000 miles in it too....

Wilco,
Road tax really hacks me off. What does it pay for? What do I see for my £400+ a year?

When I started driving tax was supposedly directed to roads maintenance and street furnature upkeep. Nowadays the roads are crap and full of holes. Motorway nearside lanes are heavily grooved by HGV's and when repairs are carried out they take forever and then only last 5 minutes. A stretch of the M60 around Ashton u Lyne and Middleton was resurfaced 18 months ago and is due for digging up again in a couple of months.

They bang on about the environment and saving the planet, how does clobbering me every year have any effect ? It doesn't stop me driving, it doesn't stop me buying the car I want, it does absolutely nothing to protect the environment. Its just a tax on those fortunate enough to be able to afford a large car, for Gods sake the tax on fuel makes a small fortune for the Government, where does that go ?

I too have the same thing. I looked on the Parkers web-site and Touareg 3.0 TDi Alltitudes from 03/11/2008 are rated as 244g/K (this was the date of the new 240ps Common Rail engine with DPF).
My car was new on 30/6/2009 and I have checked the engine power rating on the details printed in the manual and when converted from KW to PS it is the 240ps engine but my V5 also shows 262g/K.

Do you think the issue is with the dealer registering it wrongly or the DVLA usiong the wrong data?

stu , i,d like to say you,re welcome mate but you,re not & fingers crossed you,re not in line for the cull , my guess would be a minimum 3/500,000 will be looking for new pastures to graze during the next 18months
its no surprise that no party wants to bring the pensions apartheid to the front cause they,d go down faster than drogba in the box but it can,t be long now before the dopes out there in electorateland realise that between 22% & 25% of their council tax is for the pensions to local government personnel , yeah , you could,nt make it up if you tried , probably why the labour party still got 9million votes(similar numbers of civil servants maybe? lol)
me , well i,m self employed so ive had to feather my own nest

not sure about the civil servants but read yesterday that 82% of immigrants who cast a vote, voted labour , quite how they know is beyond me but does back up the old adage " don,t bite the hand that feeds "

The 244gm's seems to have come in since the 59 plate in September. If you look at 09 cars it is 262 and 58 or 08 cars it is 278 depending on when. I have been watching this closely for 5 months now and it is a minefield to work out what it should be. I would suggest you enter the reg plate of your car here:

And select vehicle enquiry.

Going back to the tax issue I think it is totally unfair that the tax should jump from £245 straight to over £400. It should follow the same steps as the others amounts do with something like £275 and £300 for the highest emissions.

The other thing that is unfair is why does a car producing 262gm get the same tax as a say a BMW M5 producing over 350gm?

The VED range should extend all the way up to the 350gm mark then over in my opinion and not stop at 255gm.

I noticed Gordon Brown was taken back home at the weekend in none other than a couple of 59 plate Range Rovers which even with the diesel V8 are in the highest band.

Well thanks for the links - Parkers confirms that the 3.0 CR DPF auto tiptronic (my car - 59) is 244g/km which it says was introduced in Nov 2008. So the DVLC are using the wrong figure I think, unless my new car was sitting in a field for 12 months. I see Neil's point - this seems to be a nightmare as I bought an unregistered stock car. I need to check the g/km from the chassis number with VW (see first post in this thread for the problem)

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/road-tax/?deriv=40161#manu=12243&model=1011&deriv=40161

Best Check your Registration Certificates... This might make a big difference if the tax bands are adjusted. The Conservatives and LibDems have said today that environment is a key issue which sounds like a justification for a punitive tax strategy to me.

I bought an unregistered stock car, Cas - in Sept and it was registered on 1st Oct 2009 (59). It was received at the Dealer from VW at the end of July 09. It's the 3.0 DPF CR 240ps (176kW) which makes it 244g/km like yours in my book ... but If I look at the technical data section in the massive handbook it states that a 176kW Auto is 262g/km. Is this an old data sheet? Is it correct? I am now totally confused and think the only way forward is to talk to a VW dealer with the VIN No and other data.

Further to Wilko's last......

Turkeys don't vote for Christmas!

(Posted whilst sipping a cocktail in the lounge at the Las Vegas Aria whilst avoiding paying tax to the ungovernment)

I have followed the election with utter dismay and have turned into a drunken casino lizzard.....I dont want to come home but I think uncle Sam might have other ideas.

If you put the registrations in from any of the pre 59 plate cars available at the VW dealers you will find that most come out at 262. I think Parkers has got it wrong.
There is also something else funny with these dates and MPG.

25.9 in 2008 then 28.5 in 2009 then only late 2009 does it go up to 30mpg. This has been what is putting me off buying a 2008 car.

At the end of the day it will be the DVLA that issue the TAX and there figures will be what you get charged on.

I would be keen to find out what they have to say.

Perhaps the VW brochures have the mpg and emissions over the last few years??

Before I purchased the car I was convinced that the CO2 & mpg changed at the time of the Common Rail engine. I can't remember all the sources I used in research but the VW website was one of them and I was looking around from about Easter 2009. I'm pretty sure some used Altitudes were quoted as 244g/km on the used website at that time. I am shooting off an email to the supplying dealer (Stoke VW) today
