Brake lights stay on after releasing pedal.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with this problem.
Basically the rear brake lights all come on as expected when you depress the brake pedal. However when you release it, the stay on eventually going off some 8-10 seconds later.
My initial thought was it must be a brake light switch somewhere with a sticky spring but it doesn't appear like the touareg uses such a component. I see a switch exists on the master cylinder but that looks to be electronic

Any idea where to look?

Mine does that, was thinking its holding the brakes on automatically when releasing the parking brake, though it was normal unless anyone knows any difference.

You're right!

It was because the parking brake was on, when I took it off the brake acted normally again. I just replaced a rear cluster which is why I was testing the brakes and noticed this behaviour and thought it was odd. 8 years almost I've had this car and never noticed it before!

I had the same problem immediately after buying a used 2012 Touareg and the fix was just changing the brake fluid. Nothing damaged just needed a bit of love, perhaps it's been a while since yours had it changed?
Puzzled to read that a brake fluid change might fix the brake lights.

Can anyone enllghten me?

I was just as surprised that it fixed the issue as well but I can only assume that the new brake fluid restored the springy nature of the pedal meaning that it was then pushed sufficiently far away from the brake light sensor switch.

It had been a good 10 years or so since the brake fluid had been changed, rather alarming to think that there are people out there on the roads with brakes barely functioning, especially when it was only £40 to change the fluid.
