I need to change the rear back light bulb on the driver's side.

There have been some useful posts but most of them can not be found.

I notice that I have to take out two screws on the side before taking the whole light assembly out. However, I do not know how to get the whole thing out.

By the way, please advise me if I go to Halford, which bulbs I need to get there?

Thanks a lot.

Got it changed today. Nearby garages quoted ?30-35. I went to a VW Specialist in South Harrow to check out the shop in addition. FREE of CHARGE. 3 minutes.

The shop is clean, 5-6 bays, a lot of spaces for parking, staff very nice. They even gave me some good tips if the bulb burns out again (some troubles with the Touareg engineering design of the rear light cluster).

RECOMMENDED.

This thread reminded me of an email a Treg tech kindly sent me following a post about removing the units:

Original post:

Having replaced several rear brake bulbs (convinced I had a faulty batch from Halfords) I can confirm that it is easy to remove and fit the lense. As mentioned use a piece of nylon parcel strapping or similar (I used kite string!) to pull off the lense cover and get ready to catch it! Remember to put some vaseline on the lugs of the new cover then it's easy to put on and remove again inthe future.

Technician's response:

This is worth watching with Halfords I have seen it before, they fit the wrong bulbs

Touareg stop/tail bulbs have off-set pins unlike the standard 380 type bulb the pins are in line

Also on the early models if the plastic plug that holds the light in is white, then change it for a black one

The brake light bulb burnt out again in 36 hours after being fixed. However, when I turnt the light knob on, the rear light still appeared, but no brake light when I depressed the brake. As advised by the mechanic, I will bring the car to them today to see what's wrong with the part.

It's done. I did not watch the whole process of nearly 1 hour. The mechanic told me he took the whole cluster out, cleaned them, checked and fixed all joints, wires, earth??? etc. Changed the bulbs of this side. The problem won't happen again. Again, FREE of CHARGE.

Yes, it was free again. He said it was a simple job. I think next time I come back I will bring him a bottle of good wine as a token of appreciation.

What does Cheryl Tweedy mean by the way?
