I know this has been talked about before! but my brakes assist workshop & esp light has come on,reading on other pages it seems a common fault? do I trust taking to VW dealers or Independent who when I phoned they seemed as though they new what they were talking about!it's more advice that I need? and is it still safe to drive. I have drove it today & there seems no difference in the driving of it!55 plate auto 2.5 thanks.

Normally this is just a sensor.
Car is safe to drive as long as brakes feel and react the same as before.
I had this done under warranty so can't advise on cost.
If i were you i'd get a price from dealer and indy but make sure the indy has fixed the fault before.
shouldn't be big job though.

My dealer told me mine is the ABS unit and the part alone is £1400 + labour, they are exploring with VW for a cost contribution.

Not impressed that something like this has failed.

Just to let you know indy does a lot of VW work done these before, + other repairs, plugged my car in this morning & the fault is pressure sensor, charging £200 labour + part which seems pretty good to me!

I have just had this done. Cost £407 at VW, however if you look at my other thread (Thread) I still have the same Break Assist error which is now caused by a second sensor. The ABS light has now cleared but I still get the Brake Assist workshop message. It is going back to VW in a couple of weeks for "Investigation".

Eventually got this re-diagnosed by a VW specialist John Bowles T. Wells, it seems later cars 2007> need a whole ABS unit replaced at circa £1400 + fitting, luckily mine was a sensor only job and came in at £190 fitted.

I think there is a track record of VW ABS units [manufacturer is Teves?] failing and, provided there is a full VW service history [this is where it's handy if you've stayed within the dealership network rather than saving a few bob with by using your local garage/little man] then VW have been known to make a full contribution if you are out of warranty.

Alternatively, a rebuild with a 2 year warranty:

Here's something else:

And a Touran thread too - see "Frank" in particular who rang 10 VW dealers all of whom offered 50% off up front on the 'phone.

I have a full History with VW however they will only make a 50% contribution.

Other thoughts:

Is you car now 4 years old?

If so does your dealer offer discount on labour and parts - and do they price match local quotes?

Yes they offer deals for VW servicing etc for 3+ yr old cars, I used them for the last service, however the repair has been done and they were the dealer quoting £1400 + labour.
