Hi everyone
, I've got a problem

Does anyone here have or have had any problems with their aux heater? Specifically I've noticed two 'symptoms' with the beast. First and most annoyingly, when the aux heater runs I can smell the fumes of (presumably) diesel. When I say smell, you can even see it in the car! I've tried to activate air recirculation to ease the problem however the aux heater runs when it is cold, so I tend to want my windscreens clearing which automatically deactivates air recirculation. Does anyone have any suggests as to what could be causing this really annoying problem. Oh and just to aid in the diagnosis, you should see the fumes coming from under the car!

Second problem, might be the aux heater. I can hear a wearing noise, bit like a pump or something coming from the underside of the car - near to the aux heater exhaust...doesn't do it all the time though...

Any suggestions

Danny,
Have been driving tregs for 4 years now with many cold morning short trips to work and never yet have I smelt fumes inside the car. Given the position of the exhaust I would think this is because the recirculation is switched on when the aux heater is in operation to stop fumes being sucked in to the cabin during operation. This would also help the cabin heat up quickly. It would seem there is something wrong with your with your heater programing or the recirculation is stuck open.
Doesn't look like something that would be easily checked or sorted though. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Goose. I'm hoping for another cold morning so that I can look into the problem further....I was quite concerned this morning as my 2 year old son was also in the car - not sure he liked the smell of diesel!

Danny,

That doesn't sound good at all - I wonder if a bulkhead seal has come loose somewhere? AC drain hose or something like that? either way if it happened again I'd get VW to look at it straight away

Just googled quite extensively. Seems the Touran suffers from this problem...I wonder if the aux units are the same?

I hope it's not a major fault, especially if the extended warranty doesn't cover it. I've had many problems with the Treg and the shine is starting to tarnish a little

Hi Danny

Dont worry your Aux heater wont blow up or blow away the left side of your car. In most cases that white smoke you see pounding out from the little exhaust is mostly unburned fuel, that ended up in the exhaust system of the aux heater. It some times even makes a little poping noise. That is common in the frosty mornings with alot of short runs .
It starting to smoke once the exhaust side of the aux heater warm up and burns away all that diesel sitting in the exhaust .

I have replaced some units in the earley days to cure that problem. There is an software upgrade for that and for the ticking noise there is an restrickter valve we fit just infront of the little pump. The little valve also helped with the over fueling of the aux heater.

Try 1rst and take a good run in the car and let the system clear itself. That should sort it.

Good luck

Thanks for the response

Spoke to the dealer technician. Initially thought was that it could be the glowplugs. I thought they are only used to start the engines and so not sure how they could be contributing to the smoke. But hey, I guess this is why I work in IT rather than mechanical engineering!

I'll mention your commets (do you mind?) to the stealer when I take the car tomoz

Cheers again

Apparently the fault with the aux heater was caused by some mud/dirt that had been sucked into the aux heater exhaust. Guess this was the result of my off road day
Still upwards and onwards. Only cost to me is the ?126 investigation charge. Most of the mud has been cleared out.

TregTech, have you seen this before? Might sound obvious question but how could it have got there, if the dirt can get sucked in...what happens when you go through some water?
