Can anyone help my Touareg is a 53 plate with 80,000 miles on it. Driving it this morning and suddenly there is a loud banging noise from the gearbox area. AA called out & towed car home & it appears the gear box is no more. Car had been making a clunk noise when accelerating up hills took it to a VW dealer they said gearbox was on it's way out but mechanic recommended driving it until it went. So that's today!!
I have a friend who has a Touareg same age & same mileage his gearbox has just been replaced. Is it coincidence or are there other owners put there with the same problems. I love my car eventhough it has had quite a few problems & recalls, but I would really like to take it up with VW as everyone I have mentioned it to seems shocked that an automatic gearbox has not lasted.
Thanks

Hi

Welcome, and sorry to hear the bad news

80k is nothing for an auto gearbox - even my dads Skoda managed 155k miles on the same auto box and it was still going strong when he got rid of it

Could you let us know the cost of a new one?

Hi Annie,

I wonder if gearbox servomotor software has been updated? The Touareg does/did suffer from gearbox issues related to the servo's in the gearbox - this could possible lead to problems - worth checking

Bad luck.

Have you ever had the gearbox oil changed? Although it's sealed-for-life it's a good idea to have the fluid changed at about 50k miles.

Annie - you need to shop around - dealers are trying out for business at the moment so try as many as you can - also get an independent garage quote

Try an autobox specialist such as..

http://www.theautomaticgearboxcompany.co.uk/pricelist.html

Honest John in the telegraph usually recommends someone down South, but Ican't remember who they are. All depends where you are as well!

DR Jim,
I know who you mean.
I drove past them last week on the way to Finchley.
They have a sign up outside saying "Recommended by Honest John"

They are,

DON'T GO TO A VW DEALER for your gearbox unless your car is in warranty or you have a mechanical insurance policy that pays franchised dealer labour rates.

Go to the Honest John website [Daily Telegraph] - he recommends two or three excellent auto gearbox specialists who can recondition boxes much more cheaply - and spot and fix problems that franchised dealers can't or won't which sometimes means you don't even new a new gearbox!

Thanks for your replies have asked an independent garage for a full diagnosis & second opinion. Have also tried a number of garages & independent gearbox specialist but no-one will touch a Tourareg gearbox...... so far!

I PM'd Annie for an update and got the following reply which, as far as I can see, she has not posted publicly but she is asking for help.

oh yes an update. Lots has been happening.....

Took my car to a non VW garage for the first time in it's life for a second opinion. (Garage belongs to a friend of family & totally trust 100%) banging noise was a split (not just one split but totally mangled) prop shaft caused by excess torque from the gearbox , This cost me ?1300. Hooray we thought not ?4500.

However after driving away from garage after 10 miles the gearbox gave a familiar bang. Took it back to garage & they explained iunfortunately it was must be a different problem & gearbox had caused the other damage & it could happen again. So my lovely Touareg is sat on my drive as I am too scared to drive it & we are just deciding what to do with it. My husband is now very anti VW, but even after all the other problems I have been so impressed with their customer service up until now & I love my Touareg I don't know where to start to get us out of the nightmare. Ultimately it would be fantastic if VW recalled the car & swapped it for a different Touareg to restore my faith.

Just to let you know I have since spoken to a friend whose sister's Touareg had the same problem. I would love to do a survey to find out how many other people have had the same problem.

Thanks for your concern & would love to hear from anyone else that has had the same issues & if anyone has any ideas, what I can do..

Many thanks

just thinking out loud here, but could the route cause be related to incorrect stepper motor software control? I really have never got my head around the whole stepper motor functions in the 4x4 system, however a possible reason for the excessive torque causing failure?

ok, another possibility of the root cause - 'drive shaft bearing' may need replacing or may have needed replacing?
