Hi all, as you've seen from the other threads I've been using RSAP with good success in my 2015 MY Touareg for the online services with Android phones. While this works well, there are a few limitations:
http://www.a5oc.com/...nstalled-5.html
the gist of it is the OS the Audi MMI / RNS 850 runs has support for a few USB ethernet adapters built in, so make a change in the green menu, get a couple of cheap bits of kit & you can use tethering on your phone to share it's internet connection over wifi, use a small bridge to connect to that wifi & present it via ethernet to the RNS 850...
This is the kit list I've bought:
USB to Ethernet adapter: https://www.amazon.c...duct/B00MYT481C (from what I can find out the RNS 850 supports these chipsets: AX88772 AX88772A AX88172) ÂŁ6.99
TPLink MR3020 Portable wireless router: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322119579553 (or anything you can power in the car which can connect to a wireless network & bridge it to ethernet) ÂŁ18 for a lightly used one, amazon has new for about ÂŁ25
Audi MMI USB cable: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172258536031 (this is not an offical Audi / VW one, works fine for me) ÂŁ4.39
Short ethernet cable, had one kicking about
Something to power the bridge with - I had a dual USB 12v adapter already, one port charges my phone, the other the TPLink, some posts on the Audi forum talk about using a USB hub, but this can be hit and miss with power consumption.
Not a huge bill.
In terms of setting it up, this was the process I used:
Rather pleased with this setup, works reliably (rebooted the phone / TPLink etc.. while fiddling earlier in the week inside & it's good at re-connecting - it's a bit more future proof than the RSAP stuff - I've swapped the BT profile to the standard handsfree / audio one rather than the remote SIM. I'm using this: https://play.google.....Llama&hl=en_GB to make sure Wifi Hotspot is enabled on my phone when it detects being connected to the BT in the Touareg.
Right, have lunch to make & probably more nappies to change!
Cheers
Rob
Update to this, the tethering piece was a bit more miss than hit, so I've bought a ZTE MF823 dongle (which the TPLink supports) & a free 3 200mb / month Sim: https://www.three.co.uk/Free_SIM_MBB/Order works 100% reliably - really good & cost effective solution.
- Limited phone support - no iPhone, Windows phone, not all androids etc..
- The modem in the Touareg is 3G only - 7.2Mbps from what I can tell, while the data aspect of this isn't a major concern in the car, the lack of 4G is an issue (I've recently moved from 3 to EE who support 4G calling on my handset, not having this available on the car has quite an impact on phone signal - there is 4G coverage in places that there isn't 3G on EE & this is only set to continue)
- Linked to the above, upgrading your handset is a pain to make sure it supports RSAP & with more frequencies coming which the RNS850 may not support it's only getting worse
- If you're on a call you can't move it to / from RSAP without dropping it as you can with BT handsfree

In terms of setting it up, this was the process I used:
- Updated firmware on TPLink to latest
- The RNS 850 has a bug in the firmware apparently which assumes the gateway will be 192.168.2.1 (regardless of what it is told by DHCP from the router) so you need to set the TPLink to be on 192.168.2.1, it automatically updated the DHCP range appropriately. The Audi version has the same bug but expects the gateway to be 192.168.1.1 just to make life complicated
- Enabled hotspot on my phone, configured the TPLink to use it, then connected the USB adapter to my laptop & the TPLink & made sure the laptop could get on the internet using the new connection - it could
- I'd already got the green menu enabled, if you don't, you need to enable it. Go into it & scroll down to config
-
- then Install fair mode
-
- Plug the MMI USB cable in & connect the USB adapter / router / power
-
- Reboot the RNS, make sure tethering is enabled on your phone, the TPlink should connect to it automatically
- As usual give things a couple of minutes to start, online POI / Google earth should come to life.
