About to be a Beetle-bum....

2185 Views 18 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Buster
The missus is desperate for a 'cute' safe little run around, so think the TT is gonna get himself a new girlfriend.... Had a budget of 5k, so Mini was out of the equasion unfortunately..... Much to my dismay...

Excuse the quality of the pic, crappy nokia N70 last night....

Anyone here owned/still drive a Bug...? Any comments or advice..?!?!

But remember as Thumper's mum said....... "If you can't say something nice... Don't say nuthin' at all...."

I'm assuming that means you don't have anything nice to say.....

Look, it's not my choice... the lady is making the decision here... I'm just stumping up the cash... and unfortunately I just can't stretch to Mini money.... if I could I would, but I can't...

Oh poo.

She's Silver
2.0 8v
Full VWSH
Heated Seats
Front Fogs
Electric Sunroof (so, pretty much every optional extra bar leather)
40k miles...
2000,V plate, so nearly as old as me
and from a 'friendly' VW dealership, so comes with a full 12 months VW warranty too...

If it were for me, I'd look for a 1.8T or a V5 (or even a diesel... don't tell Meld).... but just can't get one for the budget....

So this fits the 'cute', 4 airbags and 4+ NCAP rating she's after.... We just missed a yellow one, but this one is equally as unmolested...

Sorry I'm not talking about a acquiring a new Bentley or 911 GT3....

Hiya HFG

I had a 1.6 and a 2.0

Loved 'em both though the 1.6 edged it for me (and a few ?K cheaper as well when new!)

Ooodles of room for driver and passenger (no space in back but who cares??) and I love the interior - seats were also REALLY comfy

Though acceleration isn't anything to write home about, they are a hoot to drive as the floor pan is wide and the centre of gravity low, so you can throw 'em around - and the brakes are tip top

2.0 is a bit rough 'cos its ony an 8v and to be honest, I preferred the 1.6 which was lighter and nippier.

And to have a car where other drivers wave at you is ace - none of the embarrassed looks away or pretend ignores you get with the average Treg driver

Oh yeah - very nicely put together car too.....feels very solid and Tank like

Thanks John,

The Yellow bug we nearly had was a 1.6, drove that and felt like a dream, was practically a new car... i guess that's the difference of 16 valves.... Convinced a friend of mine to buy a Golf 1.6 GL 400 years ago, as it's 100bhp with all the gubbins compared to overpriced GTI with an extra 15 horses...

And like you say, the rear isn't huge, but barely ever going to have passengers in the back, the Treg will do any big camping trips or pickups from the airport...

It's just a big fat TT, and I'm still more than happy with her....

And John, not a single Wisecrack... are you coming down with something?

Thanks stubbles, don't feel so crazy now...

Wisecrack? Moi?

Seriously, I don't think the Beetle gets a fair ride cos it was released as a bit of a novelty car, but actually is a VERY nice car to own - solid, comfy and pretty good to drive for a small car. I know a lot on here (including SWWBO - Scottie Who WILL Be Obeyed) will disagree, but I rate it above the new Mini but it's horses for courses

I was gutted when I got rid of the Beetle to buy the Treg, and while the sadness didn't last long, the 'fun' factor isn't there in the treg (ie. you can't dick about with other treg drivers on the motorway like you can in a Beetle) though the treg hits different buttons.

I'd take the plunge - and for once I'd recommend a smaller engine (ie. the 1.6 16v)

One thing to watch out for though - front tyres.........new ones about every 15 k miles

But at ?40 a pop, whos complaining?
