The good news, in these tough economic times, is that a mate of mine (who has been a mechanic for 20 years) will fit new pads and discs for ?20!

The bad news is I need to supply the parts, and I have no idea what to buy!

4 questions then... (and I have an 07 3.0V6 TDi BTW, in black, very nice, wifes loves it)

1) I need new pads, but do I need new discs? The car has done (mostly town based) 24k miles, and there is a slight lip at the top of the discs if I run my finger up them - is this enough to warrant changing them?

2) Aside form pads and discs (and making sure I choose the right ones!), what else will I need to get for him (and now jokes about cups of tea please)? Some poeple have mentioned sensors?!?

3) Suggestions of where to get them and how much I should pay?

4) I've noticed a couple of sites will offer vented discs - I have no idea if mine are at the moment (as its dark outside so I cant see), but if they're not at the moment, is there any issue in upgrading?

Thanks for your help to forum virgin...

The discs only need replacing at 30 mm thickness or less and you should measure these accurately with a caliper.

I think it is unlikely you will need new discs at this stage unless you are very heavy on brakes.

Do a search on here -someone has done a good post with pix showing how to do the job and where to get the parts.

The only thing I will add is that I hope your friend really knows what he's doing as the roadworthiness of the car is your responsbility.

I think most of the discs for tregs are vented.

You can check out the various options here - http://www.brakesint.co.uk/- click on "shop now"

If you have a look @ your current pads, you can identify the correct options from the pics.

Alternative is to ring up your local stealer and ask for a quote - if you give your reg, they should know exactly what you require.
At least that way you know which bits to get from the independents.

Get a quote from a VW for the parts, that will give you a base referance to compare against.

I have bought a lot of parts from Eurocarparts, they are a national outfit, www.eurocarparts.co.uk, all the parts i used to buy for my bmw were original parts at half the price.

GSF (german swedish french) parts is another outfit, similar prices, but i always found eurocarparts to be a better bunch.

Apart from that there are the specialist houses depending where you are in the country, first thing thou get a price from VW for parts so have a point of comparison.

Parts numbers can be got from www.vagcat.com, i had a quick look for a 2005, the disc looked ventilated and came up at 136 euros just as an example.

You will also neeed the wear sensors for the new discs.

Following good practice, you should also fit new disc retaining screws [one each side on the front I think].
