Sorry guys, I know we all hate tyre threads, but I've searched and not found an answer.

I have a 2016 R-Line with 21" Mallory wheels and standard sprung suspension (no air).

Standard size for these is 275/40 R21.

I'd like a deeper sidewall.

Can I fit a 275/45 R21?

Has anyone done it, what was the result? Any issues? VW Approved size? Insurance? Diameter and wheel arch clearance? etc?

These are what I'm thinking

Pirelli Verde Scorpion 275/45 R21

Thanks

Not directly answering your question- but I've fitted 255/55 R19 instead of the OE 265/50 R19 - so taller sidewall and more accurate speedometer but I can't discern any ride improvement.

Done... No problems with size.

I found that Pirelli Scorpion wear rate was poor. I had them as original fitting and changed to Goodyear eagle as I've used them several times before, wear rate much better and quieter too. Tire Wheel Automotive tire Vehicle Tread

One thing to bear in mind though is that the spare will have a small difference in circumference so should only be used to travel the shortest distance to a tyre depot. I carry a tyre string kit as an alternative. ????

[quotI have a 2016 v6 RLine fitted with 21 inch wheels. When I bought it in Nov19 from a franchised dealer it cam with 275/45/21 General Grabber M&S tyres. I had never heard of these but they have proved to be quiet. Only 3000 miles but showing no sign of wear.r timestamp='1599043301' post='683134']

This is the outcome of your proposal, wheel width and offset i have guessed at but wouldn't change anyway.

I've just had my Mallory wheels repaired and powder coated, and switched to 275/45 R21 Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season (hybrid M&S marked, but still a road tyre). I was finding the low profile a problem given where I live and the off road use my car sees a couple of times a week, alloys just got totallly scuffed and I ended up with a massive bulge in the sidewall from hitting a pot hole. Now the sidewall is significantly bigger (275 * 5% = 13.75cm) and they just look like normal SUV wheels now, not low profile, ride height difference and visibility is noticeable when in the car.

They fit in the wheel arch no problem at all, I'm happy.

I looked at those... But ended up fitting General Grabber AT3s and I love em.

How much did it cost you to get 4 mallorys refurb'd?

I had mine done just a week ago. Full refurb, chemical strip and powder coated.. worked out at £107 each including tyre remove/replace & balance and vat.

That was a weekend rate which is less 15%.

Thats a really good price! How long did it take to do?

Did you stick with the original, kinda bright'ish VW alloy colour? (Bit too 'shouty' IMHO) I could be tempted to go with the same colour as a similar vintage Q7 that have a darker finish...

"The Wheel Specialist" is a franchise so you might have one local to you. Check online. The one I used said they can turn around a full refurb in a day.
They offered me a 15% discount if I dropped off on a Friday and collect Monday but of course you have to manage without the car for longer.

Colour is very much a personal choice and depends on what works with the cars colour.

I've never damaged a wheel but I've changed colour twice now.
Previously I changed to a dark grey which suits my Canyon grey car and is also a little more practical in that they don't show the dirt or brake dust as easily.
This time I went a little darker still, almost black.

Thanks for recommendation @chaser!

I'm in the process of dechroming my Treg, only the window trims left to do - I'm just not sure if black wheels on my all black, no chrome Treg might be a bit too much... Would be really interested to see any photos of the 2 colours you've had, if you've got any?

More of a heads up to guide your own research really. In my experience any refurb place is only as good as the person who does it.

There's a general consensus that you should avoid wheel colours close to the cars colour for fear it'll look like a mismatch. Black would arguably be the exception for those that might deliberately want that total black look.

I don't have any photos other than ones in the factory silver. Maybe I can get some when I eventually have a car that's not covered in road salt! 😠

I'm still using the original sensors Cass. I did consider having them replaced as the car is now almost 6.5 years old. Decided not to as I'm hoping that since I've only just tripped over 37k miles there might still be some life left in them.
🤞 they'll last until the next set of tyres.

Mine are coming up 10 years old in May - 77k mikes and I’m needing a wheel refurb soon so might have to replace them. Sod’s Law they will fail if I just have the originals reinstalled 🤔

Wow.. no point in tempting fate, you've done well with them.
Reassuring for me to know that they can last that long. 👍
