Hey all new to the forum and new to the world of Touareg ownership....well I will be soon anyway (picking her up on Saturday)

its a 2014 RLine 245PS which has the upgraded 21" Mallory wheels, Looking at the cost of 275/40 R21 tyres is pretty eye watering compared with 275/45 R21s or 19" wheels etc.

Can you get away with replacing the tyres on the Touareg with 275/45 R21s?

Means going from a total wheels size of 29.66" to 30.74" (+3.7%)

Typically, the overall diameter of all OEM wheel and tyre combinations on the Touareg for all models and all years is 29 inches, give or take a fraction.

And, typically, you can get away with up to 31.5 inches overall diamater though some have managed to get just over 32 inches into the wheel arch.

Cheers NoobyT.

Been doing some more reading up on tyres etc and it looks like they get more wear than I was expecting. Had a friend with a Mk1 Treg when they first came out and he mentioned he was going through a set a year but doing some more reading it looks like if you get a decent set and dont have a lead foot you should be able to expect + 25K miles out of a set which is about 2 years for me.

Will probably bite the bullet this time round and just get some Pirelli Scorpian Verde tyres this time round ~£500 for two fitted, and see how they last me. Might go back to looking for smaller rims or larger profile tyres next year if they are wearing away too fast!

Some early Tregs used to eat tyres, not least due to a stepper motor fault but more recent cars are very reliable on tyres.

My current T3 R-Line is coming up 4 years old and has done almost 30k on the original set of Goodyear Eagle F1 SUV's - I'd highly recommend them

You must NOT mix tyres on a Touareg.

If you already have the Scorpion Verde on the existing 4 wheels then that's fine, BUT only as long as the new pair are within 3mm tread depth of the other pair you are keeping otherwise you are in for 4 new tyres.

I've just had my Mallory wheels repaired and powder coated, and switched to 275/45 R21 Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season (hybrid M&S marked, but still a road tyre). I was finding the low profile a problem given where I live and the off road use my car sees a couple of times a week, alloys just got totallly scuffed and I ended up with a massive bulge in the sidewall from hitting a pot hole. Now the sidewall is significantly bigger (275 * 5% = 13.75cm) and they just look like normal SUV wheels now, not low profile, ride height difference and visibility is noticeable when in the car.

They fit in the wheel arch no problem at all, I'm happy.
