Hi all

Strange one. Other half bought a second hand VW Up! from our local dealer a couple of weeks back.

Tried to check it out with vcds today but something is plugged into the port and is secured with a cable tie. There's a ribbon cable coming out of it and goes up under the dash.

Anybody come across this? Any idea what it might be?

Think we will be visiting the dealer soon for an explanation.

Cheers.

I've seen some head up speedo display systems and supplimentary instrument pods that plug into the OBD port ??

Nothing fancy on car as far as istruments go. Suppose I could cut the cable tie and pull it out and see if anything stops working but think it's best to let the dealer see it. Looks like a scan isn't part of the pre sale inspection!

Just had another thought, it could be for a black box recorder unit for insurance purposes mainly for newly qualified drivers, which would fit with it being an UP ??

X2 on the black box for insurance purposes.

I would cut the cable tie and disconnect it.

It will have a GPS tracker on the other end that sends the time, speed and braking data from the port.

It could also be something like a Trakm8 used to monitor fleet drivers/hire cars/pizza deliveries/similar.

Sounds likely but might let the dealer disconnect it. Can't locate the other end of the cable and would prefer not to have something up above the pedal box that could drop down in the future.

Cheers guys.

You can get an OBD lock but that’s unlikely to have wires going away from it so an insurance black box could be a good shout

So much for the VW Das WeltAuto Used Car check

Yep, one of the DRLs wasn't working when we collected and scan checkbox is ticked on inspection sheet.

Dropped car off at dealer earlier today, waiting on a call back.

Think the Dealer Principal might just hear from Mrs T!

After the dealer having the car for most of the day we got a call to say that the technician was certain it was an insurance related black box, it would do no harm and that the car was ready for collection.

They were told that the car would be collected once they confirmed the device had been removed!

Had a Volvo for a few years and the difference in customer service is astounding.

Ask them if they've done the full Das Welt vehicle checks now then given they clearly didn't scan it as they should have done

I have an initialed copy of the PDI inspection checklist and the scan is ticked. That will be mentioned at a future date, hoping they just remove the device.

When we told the service advisor we were leaving the car 'til the device was removed the girl said she would need to speak to the sales manager. Not expecting them to refuse but will play my cards close to my chest for now ;-)

The Sales Manager should have no say in a service issue in correctly prepping a used car.

I’d be getting in touch with the Dealer Principal and asking if this is a matter you should be taking up with VW Customer Care as the service you have had to date is questionable. Ask them if they are in the habit of selling used cars from a VW dealership which clearly haven’t been prepped in accordance with VW’s Das WeltAuto used car check policy. How could they have scanned the car when a non-standard device was fitted in the port

Cass, I totally agree with your suggested course of action but that's for later, would like the current situation to run it's course first.

I suspect the workshop will be contacting the Sales Manager to get him to agree that sales will cover the man hour cost of removal. The plug will come out easy enough but the actual device removal may be more complicated.

Isn't it a pity there are so many comments on here about poor VW service?

Yes, sadly many more than compliments but in today’s society we often complain first and forget to give credit when it’s due

Got a call this morning to say that the car was ready for collection, black box device has been removed.

Scanned with vcds, no faults found, happy ending.
