All right, I know, I shouldn't be visiting the Daily Mail website but it's interesting that road deaths should have fallen but haven't because of in-car distractions.

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen bad driving when it's clear the driver is doing something on their 'phone.

And as for the large screens now being fitted where you have to find the right "button" to press to make something work, that's just plain crazy and they should be banned.

Proper switch good, touch screen VERY BAD.

Personally I would crush any vehicle where the driver is seen using a mobile - with the driver still in it.

At the very least it should be treated the same as drink-driving with an automatic and immediate, at the roadside, 1 year ban.

Part of the reason I chose a Touareg over the then new Volvo XC90 is that the Touareg was a bit "old-school" which most functions being controlled by buttons or knobs, which can be found in the dark by feel, without taking eyes off the road - it still irks me that the one exception is the Traffic Programme which frequently needs cancelling as radio stations are pathetic at sending the end signal on time, so you have to look at the display to see where to touch the screen.
