Hi guys, i came across this the other day.
https://www.youtube....h?v=fBhb8CEixjU
http://www.naviplus....uareg-7P-series
It's done by an Australian company, Naviplus Entertainment. I'm trying to find a UK specialist who can do the same.
Has anyone heard about something similar in the UK?
Cheers,
Rob

This sounds very interesting. Definitely would extend the usable lifetime of the car, the RNS850 isn't really going to cut it much longer. I've not actually updated sat nav from new, so maps are quite out of date now, I've never been happy with rsap functionality as it's difficult to navigate phone book.

Very interested if you find a route to purchase, hoping price wouldn't be as high as Aus$1050 which as JohnC says it's just over £550.

Looks like there are a small number of components, with a new external mic, pity try couldn't leverage installed mic but I guess the additional functionality would be worth it.

I wonder if a group purchase would be worth considering?

Looks very interesting. I wonder how it's actually implemented. It's not a new screen is it?

Doesn’t appear so - the following is a lift from the Naviplus article:

“No such audio replacement setup like you see from brands like: Alpine / Kenwood / Pioneer etc. But uses the existing audio unit and its video / audio outputs to work with our integration modules, ultimately displaying Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the screen.

And of course, nothing will be changed nor removed from the vehicle.
The beauty of the integration is that it does not require any sort of modification nor results feature / function loss.

With Touareg, after the installation is done, simply pressing NAV button located below the screen, will turn Apple CarPlay / Android Auto platform on, and connect your phone and get it going.

Whilst pressing NAV one more time, will go back to Factory Navigation screen, and any other buttons will direct you to designated window”.

Out of interest, I’ve emailed them enquiring how the development/production is going and asking if it or something similar will be offered for the UK/EU market

Yes, I suspect you're right and that would make it a nice and clean installation.

We've moved to NZ and the RNS850 will need to be "adjusted" to local conditions (mainly SatNav), something like this might be a better solution.

Thanks
Jay

We had another member who shipped his T3 over to NZ - Mus.

He hasn’t posted for a good while but I’m sure he would have had to do the same thing - probably a unit firmware and software job or maybe even a complete new unit. I’ll have a look to see if his email is still active as he might be able to help you

Thanks.

I’ve a line on an organisation in Auckland which can do a map conversion but haven’t investigated yet. The car doesn’t arrive until the end of November.

I've wondered a number of times how Mus is getting along. Didn't his daughter in NZ have a Touareg as well?

Evening,

I've recently (as in yesterday), fitted one of these kits: https://www.aliexpre...2808175642.html (about £70 of VAT / duty on top of the price shown) - with the carplay / android auto dongle. From what I can tell it's almost the same kit as the Naviplus kit (albeit you don't have to tap into the touch screen ribbon - everything is done via the infotainment canbus, the MMI signal wire and a well constructed tap into the LVDS signal cable feed). Certainly fairly common off the shelf components bolted together. The unit has a bunch of input options for adding other sources on - I've not bothered cabling these up though.

Early days, but I'm impressed, it works well, the factory fitted camera still works, and the original system is retained - a couple of boxes to the right of the glove box behind the dash and a mountain of wiring piggybacks onto what's already there.

One word of warning, the fitting instructions aren't great at all but I got there, I dropped the glove box to take a look and had to go back inside to do another hours research on where the can bus cables were and the MMI signal wire into the RNS, but it all worked first time around.

Had a quick fiddle with Android Auto and using the unit directly (it's effectively an Android 6 tablet), has play store - google maps, waze etc.. work. You don't get integration into the MFD in between the clocks and audio requires a 3.5mm jack into the arm rest - working on tidying that up.
Attached are the instructions for the device if anyone is interested.

Cheers

Rob
Hi Rob

Now that you've had this unit for a couple of weeks what do you think? Is the performance ok? Did you install the mic, read in the description that it works with the mic in the car.

I guess my biggest concern is that the phone won't ring if listening to the radio, is this your experience?

Thanks

Xila

So, I’m guessing by the lack of Naviplus related replies so far that nobody has installed the Naviplus kit in a 7P Treg yet? It certainly sounds like a very easy to install option to get Apple CarPlay that can be removed without leaving a trace. Just a bit pricey.

I got the following response from naviplus.com.au

”The product has been sold more than an year now.

You can find more info from here:
http://www.naviplus....-Auto-c25932668

It's not simple plug and play connection but the installation usually takes about 1 to 2 hours

Thank you”

Aye Cass, I found the installation instructions on clubtouareg and it isn’t plug and play. Not too difficult but a bit fiddly. Very good once installed by all accounts but at a price.

From a quick search, the Naviplus and AliExpress systems look very similar. Hopefully Rob gets a chance to come back to us as I assume he did a little searching and discovered the systems were the same or similar. Naviplus are on eBay.au

If I can get carplay working in my T3 I would be happy to keep it another 5 years...for me it is the biggest technical delta between the T4 and the T5. Ok the chassis is lighter and there are touch screens etc. but really for £30K? So it is worth £500 plus investment. The T3 already is in credit to more than that for being so economic on tyres. £48k and 7mm of tread still on the second set of tyres.

Perhaps if enough of us wanted it we could get a deal with an audio specialist or get together. I am sure it is one of these jobs that takes half a day of nervous head scratching, panel removal (and wondering if you might accidentally brick the 850) the first time and a couple of hours easy work the second time. Or perhaps sponsor one of the most capable to do a video guide like some of the others have done so expertly and generously before.

Eagles...same as the first set. For clarity, since on reflection my statement was very mis-leading. 48K is one set of Eagles to 3-4mm and now 7mm on the replacement set and probably 10K of that on the winters. But compared to the V10 it is still brilliant.

But it is time to get out the Dunlop 3D winters. They have 5mm+ on them but probably their last outing since winters need more tread depth to be effective. Bilde rates the Pirelli Scorpions highly so I will switch to them.

Sorry- work has rather got in the way of everything else for the last few weeks!

To answer some questions, yes still impressed, I'm using it most in the android auto mode with Waze/ Tune in radio / amazon music.

Re phone calls I didn't fit the Mic, calls work fine using the factory bluetooth, they come up in the android auto display etc. No need to do anything different there.

I need to fit a USB hub to provide more power to the phone, other than that it's working well.

The install is very similar to the naviplus unit only you don't have to remove the screen, it's all controlled through canbus / the lvds cable.

Just curious if you are using this for Andriod auto or apple carplay? Does your phone communicate with this via bluetooth or do you connect it directly with a usb cable? Is the install pretty much plug and play?

Thanks

-Spencer

I use android auto via USB (You need the addon dongle to do android auto / car play).

The install is quite involved - you need to tap into the infotainment can bus wires and the MMI signal on the back of the unit in the glovebox, and provide a 12v & ground feed. The video connections are plug and play.

You need to be happy to identify the relavent wires and tap into them, nothing too scary but it's not a simple parrot style kit (but is simpler than the Australian system which requires intercepting the touch panel).
