Well the new bush arrived from Germany yesterday. Very impressive delivery time really.

I'm going to fit it at weekend, but my workshop is half a mile from home. I'd prefer to do it there but can do it at home if I have to.

It's banging really loudly at anything about about 15mph - would it be OK to drive, very slowly, down to the workshop or would you not risk moving it at all?

I drove mine from Suffolk to S. Manchester and the car survived - so just down the road should be no problem.

Well, I fitted the new Viagra repair thingy yesterday, a dead easy job but I was surprised with the existing rubber part. It was a lot less substantial than I was expecting - it was more like a rubber diaphragm about 5mm thick instead of the bush that I was expecting. Is that right? Are they all like that?

No wonder they don't last very long if they are.


Anyway, there's still a slight vibration at about 35mph but it goes away at 40mph. I think the carrier might be slightly out of line so I'll tweak it a bit and see if that fixes it.

Well, it still isn't right :(

There's a definite vibration/shudder around 35mph. It's not there at lower speeds and seems to go away at higher speeds too, plus it seems a lot worse when it's cold.

Any ideas? I wondered if it was slightly out of alignment or something?

But I didn't split it. All I did was fit the viagra thing to it, and that doesn't rotate with the propshaft.

I drove a total of about 3/4 of a mile with it banging when the bearing carrier failed. Surely it can't have damaged it?

Well I had to take the carrier off to do the repair anyway. This viagra fix is a lot more substantial than the flimsy rubber thing that was there before, so I can see how it would be more sensitive to the carrier being in line properly.

Are there any tips, or indeed measurements in order to locate it correctly?

I did put it back in the same place as it was before (clearly visible by the marks left by the fixing bolts) but when it was still vibrating I tweaked it slightly and it did seem to make it better.

Another thing which may or not be related, but it's very noisy in reverse. A definite vibration/rumble kind of noise from the drive line which can be felt through the seat and steering wheel.

It does need new front pads and maybe the noise in reverse is them dragging on the disc or something? I guess when it gets new pads next week I'll find out if that cures it or not!

I've just found a post elsewhere suggesting that the carrier might need a spacer under it to straighten out the drive line. The problem, apparently, is the rubber doughnut coupling on the transfer case is distorted slightly and the vibration is worse when it's cold because the rubber is slightly stiffer.

I'm going to go and try it now - I'll report back shortly...

I'm sure I've read about the rubber doughnut being quite tricky - maybe you need to ensure that all the bolts are torqued to the same value?

Maybe you could test the theory by heating the doughnut with a hair dryer?
I've done a few centre bearing carrier replacements including my own and all of them have had bearings ropey enough that I wouldn't use this fix.
I guess in a case like this it's unfortunate that the stiffer mount is more likely to transmit vibration too.
