This one is for the newbies who are thinking of or have just purchased a first generation Touareg. It is applicable to face-lift model as well.

:)

Quick question though. my key has all three buttons (unlock, lock and boot unlock),
Is the boot unlock an optional extra? Mine doesn't work.

The boot button only unlocks, it doesn't pop the boot open as well (if thats what you were expecting?)

I mean when I press the boot unlock button in the same manner that I press the unlock and lock button it doesn't respond. I have to press the car unlock button twice.

Although when I walk up to the car the keyless entry allows it to open.

Nope, this was a standard feature - your key is either knackered or there is a problem with the car's electronic locking mechanism.

Does the spare key work

I'd start with changing the battery and troubleshoot from there ;)

All this time I have been thinking maybe its an optional extra. I'll try changing the battery on both keys. If that doesn't work, then it will be a trip to the dealers to get them reprogrammed.

go into convenience settings using controls on steering wheel then confort then door opening option then click on tailgate. you can then open just tailgate without the doors but when you close tailgate it auto locks so dont leave keys inside.

Ah ok, another thing to check is whether the boot button (next to the petrol cap button) works - if so, like Cass mentioned, check the battery :)

From memory, you can set the opening function of the doors to single or double press but I'm not sure if you can do this with the tailgate, that's why there is a separate button on the key.

If there is a fault and it needs troubleshooting via a dealer, it could be expensive.

Have a read in the handbook to ensure that you have the MFD settings in your menu first.

Afterthought - you need to press and hold the tailgate button for a second or so to get it to open - a quick press (as in opening/closing the car doors) won't do it - you are pressing and holding it aren't you
